Question on formatting a SATA drive

Post by westy »

I just picked up a new Seagate 500 GB SATA hard drive to replace my older ATA's. I am going to use Seagate's software to clone my OS onto the new one but want to create a partition for my OS.

Should I partition it before I clone the OS or do I do it after ?

Thanks folks !

Definitely. Set up whatever partitions you want on the new drive and then clone to the partition you want.

Make sure to defragment your old drives before you clone.

SATA drivers are only specific to a motherboard chipset. if the mobo uses a VIA chipset, then you need via sata drivers, intel for intel boards, etc.
Therefore you may not find them on seagate's site. Check the Motherboards website.

Browse the disk that came with your mobo. The SATA drivers should be on there.

I got it installed fine and everything is working but in Sandra it's showing up as an ATA drive. Is that normal, and do I still need to grad the drivers off my mobo disk ?
