Pageing files
Pageing files
Does anyone know the proper setting for the page file size ? I have Windows 2000 Pro with 512 Mb PC2700 RAM. I have read many conflicting articles. Some say to make them 1.5 x's the size of your RAM, some say they should be smaller for the initial and large for the max, and then some say they should be the same size. Whats your opinion ?
Good read here http://web.ukonline.co.uk/cook/Pagefile.htm

Always set the pagefile's minimum size equal to the amount of RAM you have, regardless of what anyone says, XP addresses out memory on your hard disk even when it doesn't use it, that is why its necessary. Anyone who claims that they set theirs to zero and get a huge increase is either misinformed or lying. XP will page, no matter how much RAM you have, and whether you notice it or not. With 512MB I would say to set a min of 512 and max of 2GB. Large maximums never hurt, it wont use it unless it needs it.
up to now you can find signs earier (few years old) abortive experiments eg:
----- acctualy noone recomend PF ~|= 0 for any winOS
in the past memory price had rapidly decrased
than after amount installed ram increased to 512 or even more
so in the past they were experiments with:
zero PF (not recomended) & ramdrive (no effective)
----- PFsize minimum equal maximum not recomended for: w2k & wXP & w2k+3
in w98 time - it was methode protection against fragmentation
----- PFsize minimum =1.5*RAM recomendation was good
but for RAMamount equal or less than ram128MB
+ but if much more ram is installed
+ or ram+12MB (a few recomended)
+ or for weak PC but with big ram
after two week observations maximum PF usage + 20MB
OTOH before !!! any prg's installation duble minimum edge
----- maximum PF edge - still no clear recomendations
same recomend huge maxPF edge - NOT me
who knows - I still did no find any argument
may be ... heheheheheh
PF a few3GB b|c exactly ~ 5%-10% value from 30GB
acording to ~ virtual system cache memory value...
not you - but yours OS's calculations: w2k & ram512 are as follow:
installed memory, ram 512MB so OS should be have virtual system cache memory = 31 872 MB
it means mentioned above ~30GB
31 872 = 128+ {[(512-16)/4]*64}
b|c 31 872 MB > 512 MB so both: cache extra memory & additional addresses are needed
- please forgive me above calculation is from manuals & forget about it hehehehehe I still cannot cache the reason
so a few recomended PFmaximum = no more than 1.5 to 2*ram (eg for weak PC but with huge amount ram)
in this case succesfull experiments goals are:
PageFile speed-up and protection agaist fragmentation
but also check for minimum resources usage
++ PF on hdd: modern; fast; big data cache (buffer) acctualy up to 16MB & 7200 rpm
less important PF recomendations :
++ PF on separate partition on hdd with OS
BTW a very few recomend on edge of hdd plate
also BTW a very few recomend FAT file system patrition
also BTW a very few recomend on 4k clauster (as pages are 4k)
++ PF on second hdd (I hate such solution with removable drives)
and also BTW second hdd attached to different ribbon than OS's hdd
IMO there are also same imporant good tweaks:
:2cool: + see on page j79zlr http://j79zlr.homeunix.com/reg.php registry tweaks
BTW still is recomended (any winOS)

OTOH pf (pagefile's) management is not such important...
hierarchy of importance for internet connections:
+ the most important your CAPS (in kbps) latency (in ms)
ISP: cable or adsl depends on local both ability & quality
+ OS win: 2k; xp; 2k+3 are recomended (& equal)
+ up to ram512MB is worth the price
+ modern, fast HDD recomended
- CPU > 1000MHz is not such important
+ important is good NIC (network internal card) on PCI Ethernet card
----- it mean that any form USBmodem is NOT recomended
+ no aver special recomendations for adsl & cable modems
OTOH on market also modem&router&switch = 3 in one
+ signal interference protections are important for both wired or wireless LAN
for wireless also encoding
+ good router is recomended for home proposal:
nice; small; sillent; economic; ready for use & unattendable; relatively cheap
self protection;
the best PPPoE client;
internet connection sharing for local network (ICS) router with build-in switch
for gamers important is fast & low latency one
also
IMVHO in win 2k; xp; 2k+3 TCP/IP tweaking
is not such important as for w95.98.se.me

I have an athlon xp 1600
with win xp home
and the prog cacheman works well for me as far as the Pagefile
it is actually shareware but states tha tif you can't afford to register it it is ok o keep on using it
also I recommend Pagedefrag at systeminternals.com
to do what the name says
These work for me and I have been using then for quite awhile
but I am just a novie compared to others here
