Need help with a home domain and accessing the internet via a router.

Post by CajunTech »

I currently have a Windows 2003 server running as a domain controller connected to a linksys router. I am unable to access the internet. Can anyone help me?

Is your server set with a static IP address, or set to obtain IP automatically from the router?

Couple of things....I'll bet it's DNS related, and I need more info on your setup.

I'll use a Linksys router as an example, using it's default IP scheme of 192.168.1.1

TCP address of the server, make something like 192.168.1.11, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Make it's gateway the router, 192.168.1.1

Make it's DNS for now your ISP's two DNS servers, which you can find on your routers web admin status tab.

That should do it.

Now...since 2K server, you want to use your servers own DNS as it's DNS server (meaning you'd put 192.168.1.11), and the primary DNS server for your clients. On your DNS server properties, you want to setup forwarding to your ISP's DNS servers.

I think forwarding is what I am having trouble with. I'll try to configure it real quick. I need to disable DHCP on my router side?
