The Dells look pretty sweet.
I saw a Compaq in Costco for 1699 that would fill your needs... but it is a Compaq.

I'm at wits end here.
Every notebook I look at lacks something I need.
Here are my requirements.
Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 4 CPU in the 1.6-1.8 GHZ range
384 MB's Ram either DDR or Rambus
30 GB 5400 rpm HDD
64 MB Vid Card either GeForce 4 or ATI Radeon
DVD+CD-RW Combo Drive
Soundblaster compatible sound with good on board speakers (Compaq has kick ass sound with their JBL setup)
14.1 -15.7 SXGA TFT Screen, will go for UXGA if price is right
Must have firewire port
Must have floppy drive
$2600 or less

In all the excitement, I forgot about Sony. The Sony has it all and then some...for under $2600. Plus it looks sexy. Being that I have a new Sony DV Camcorder, this might be the perfect fit.Originally posted by Deus ex Machina

I configured an 8200 as well for under $2500.

link prolly doesn't work but it's an asskicker.
I'm a little leary of Dell for two reasons. I guided 2 people this past month in configuring Dell Desktops and they have had nothing but problems. Hard drive failure on one and also a bad vid card...the other had a bad monitor.
dell made me look bad and I lost some credibility.
Even though they replaced all the parts for free...it still took time and this frustrated my friends.
So I'm a bit hesitant....

If you were to go Dell I would go with the 1.6 (The speed difference is insignificant) and spend the 30 dollars for the Ultrasharp screen.Originally posted by UOD

UOD-
Spend the dough on a razor sharp screen, and an extra battery. Get a mild processor and a decent amount of HDD space. You'll kick yerself for not getting the biggest baddest screen available. I use lappys all the time, in all kinds of places, and my MAIN concern is how hard I have to work at seein the screen properly.
