Easy fix.
Too bad I had such a hard time reading your post, now my eyes are too tired to tell ya how to fix it.
uuuuhh..
check your IDE cables, make sure nothing came loose. NOTE: If you ever plan to burn straight from CD to CD you may want each of the drives on separate cables but BE SURE to keep your harddrive as Master.
also check the jumpers on the back of the drives. Make sure one is master and the other is slave.
Do what Amro said. It's definitely a problem with IDE.
Are the drives getting power?

If your browser can't read unicode, you should probably switch!
just install CloneCD before this happened?
Keyboard not found - Press F1 to continue.....
eyes dilated more 50x in 1 sentence - not good...
Need 800mg Perc pills for pain...
As for your problem - re-install IDE controller, check cables and buy new KEYBOARD or take it our of TURBO drive!!
I had this problem before with my system. I just shut down system and ensured the drive jumpers were set correctly and cables were installed correctly. Then went ahead and re-installed drivers for IDE controllers. Try searching for updated drivers, especiall if you use a 4-in-1 pack.
Need rest now...![]()

First of all, let me say that I've NEVER received this many responses before... and all for some stupid capital letters --HA!--
I will explain why I did that shortly, but let me update EVERYONE (I'll stick with all or none with the CAPS for now) on what my current 'sitiation' is....
I can now see both my cd drives. yippee. I believe it was the jumpers. Someone at work had the same problem where it sometimes would show up and sometimes would not... and found out his MASTER cd drive was really set as neutral. Unfortunately, my master cd-rom did not specify what was master/slave/cs and I don't have the drive info, so I just reversed it from one side to the other (I was guessing from CS to MASTER).... still did not work. My final solution: Make the old CD-ROM the slave and my new CD-RW drive the master. Horray! This does the trick. Thanks everyone for the input (even the sarcastic - funny stuff. no, really)
Why did I MiX cApiTAl letters... there's a good reason... but let me finish....
I can now see AND access both drives, but when I try to BURN a cd IT WON't WORK!!! I'm getting error messages like: Invalid Writestate, Could not perform Endtrack, Session fixation error, Could not perform fixation, Burn process failed.... This happens wether I trying to burn a CD in the CD-ROM drive or trying to burn from the Hard-drive. Could making the CD-RW drive the Master have something to do with this?
I successfully burned a few cd's BEFORE all these problems began... now I can't use it at all. HeLp!!!!!
Now for some answers: WhAt'S wItH tHe TeXt?
--I'm haNDicapped, OKAY!!! GOT A PROBLEM WITH DAT!! *sniff*
just screw'n with ya!
Seriously... several UPPER and lower case letters were printing hyrogliphics all over this web site, AND as I typed them as well... I was already pissed, so instead of rebooting to see if it clear things up I just typed it so I could read all of the letters. so there. still confused? Just let it go.
Thanks you guys.

Try switchin them around. Make the cdrom master and the cdrw slave. thats the way i have it and no problems
then make sure both cd drives have DMA enabled
btw, check your jumpers this time![]()

.... How do I try the burner ALONE on the ide chan???
I did try different cdrw disks with no success and I sure don't want to pull the burner OUT yet ... I left it in when I switched the jumpers.... perhaps I pulled the connection cable out a little?? but it still will READ. hmmm... I'll check all the connections.
I had it switch as the Slave in the first place - which was the cause of my first problem... but I may try that as a last resort.
thanks AGAIN!
What burning software do you use?
What OS do you use?
Have you formatted the CDRW disk.
Did you install more than one burning software?
Have you tried a CDR disk with same results as CDRW disk
Did you change burning software?
All those questions can be of assistance to anyone trying to help
To use it alone on the IDE chain, unplug your CDRom, and make the Writer master.
What burning software do you use?
--NERO
What OS do you use?
--WINDOWS 98
Have you formatted the CDRW disk.
--Did not have to do this with the first few disks (from the same packaged)
Did you install more than one burning software?
--No.
Have you tried a CDR disk with same results as CDRW disk
--Not sure If I understand.... try coping on the CDR disk to see if the error message is the same? that's an idea for troubleshooting, I guess.
Did you change burning software?
--No.
--I may try making it master and burning like that.
--Good ideas. Any other clues, just let me know.

Ok, here's what I would do (start from scratch)
Uninstall Nero, and shutdown.
Unplug your cdrom, and your burner and reboot to safe mode. Open device manager and remove all references to the burner, and the CDRom. Shutdown again.
Setup the burner as Master, and the CDRom as slave (unplug and replug all IDE connectors, mobo side, and drive side, just a precaution.), and reboot. If you need to install drivers for the burner do so, but if windows installs them and the Burner and CDRom appear in device manager, leave it be.
Reinstall Nero, and reboot, then try to do a burn with a CDR disk that you haven't tried using before (a brand new one)
If that doesn't work (following step by step exactly), take the burner back for an exchange.
to try the burner alone simply unplug the cdrom from both cables and leave the burner on master.
ONe final question:
my old CDrom only names the jumpers as 1,2 and 3. Since I have no documentation on this 3 year old cdrom, can I assume that the MASTER, SLAVE, and CS jumpers always go from right to left? (like my cd-burner)?
This will take it back to the original configuration - which had problems not finding the cdroms - but I can try it after making sure its not a cable disconnect.
...and to think I was thinking about making my OWN computer next time...
If you put it back to orig config it (the CDRom) was most likely the master.
Having the Burner as slave should work as well. Either way should work.
Seeing that your CDRom is a bit older, it may (or may not) be compatible in a slave/master setup with the new burner.
But you stated earlier it worked for a few days, that leads me to think a change was made, a connection came loose, an IDE channel died, orthe burner died..
When you get done with following the previous instructions, try (like was posted earlier) to use the Burner on it's own as master.
A new CDRom won't cost much if you want to try a new one instead.
All I can say about the 1, 2 ,3 for jumper settings (without documentation)is try all ways and see if any work.
The main thing is to get to the point of a fresh start now, as well as reseat all the IDE connections.
Yes, buiding your own after doing the research for compatibility is an awesome feeling when it boots up![]()
Have you tried searching the web for doc's on your burner? What Brand is it? If not sure of brand, see if you have an FCC number on your burner and go to this site to help find Documentation:
