How do I sign up for newsgroups?
    -------------------------------
    Follow the steps below:
    1. Go to http://www.comcast.net
    2. Log on to your primary comcast.net account
    3. Go to Member Services page
    4. Click Manage My Account
    5. Click Access Newsgroups (You will only be able to access from Comcast’s
    network)
    6. From the Giganews Welcome screen enter your full name
    7. Enter your primary comcast.net user name/log in (example: username).
Do not include the domain name.
    8. Review Terms and Policies and Click Yes if you accept
    9. Click Enable Account
    10. Click Finish on the “Congratulations! Welcome to Giganews!” page
    11. After 30 minutes, check your primary comcast.net e-mail account for
your ID and password for your newsgroup account.
Has anyone tried this yet? I have not been to even get the site to load. Also having prior experience with comcast's disastrous software with the transition software they had sent me before, i am a bit wary of using their software again. Has anyone been able to successfully access the comcast newsgroups today?

I managed to subscribe to GigaNews successfully.

The article retention is much better than @Home but speed is slow.

And we are restricted to 1Gig of downloads per month. I don't think I will ever reach that limit. Not a bad solution. Initially Comcast was saying that they will not provide any access to Usenet at all. I am glad that they turned around and gave us access.

Wow! The article retention at GigaNews is awesome! A huge improvement over @HOME's news servers.

If only they could do something about the download speed....

PLEASE tell me they just mean you must be on the new network and have your name and stuff to use the newsgroup. If it requires the software to be installed than it was a nice effort, but im not going that route

Good things about the new usenet service:
    1. More newsgroups than @home
    2. Better article retention than @home

    Bad things:
    1. 1 Gig limit on downloads (including headers) totally sucks. The unlimited all-you-can-download @home service was fabulous.
    2. Slow speed.

I tried to follow Neo's instructions but when I try to access Member Services, all I get is a white screen and the message "Javascript Error" at the bottom of the screen. Also, selecting "My Filespace" I just get a blank screen. Does anyone know what the possible cause(s) could be? There is at least an hour wait for customer service in my area since the transition to Comcast!

    Thanks

Try a different browser. If it does not work in Netscape, try IE and vice versa.

I had the problem where the page stops loading before the full page and hence I got blank to partialy filled screens a few times. I had to use my browser cache and hit refresh quite a few times before the page loaded fully. I have the same problem with other sites as well. Comcast Low-Speed Internet totally sucks!

Thanks for the response. Late yesterday Comcast finally got things going and my speeds have been very high. How long can this last?!! The fly in the ointment is that their e-mail has been down country-wide all day.

Angry No news is no news!!

    Hi people,
I have been reading this forum for a while now and want to thank everyone since I have learned so much from comming here!!
On the Comcast News situation I have this comment to make!!

"Comcast is the gremlin in the bomber"

I figured out how to configure the service without using the deadly comcast software solution..LOL
I found Giganews to be slow. Setting up the account was simple enough yet here is the rub!!
I downloaded from my favorite news server..."Suze"....of course you know what is there and that isn't the point!! One Gig per month is an insult, I went over my quota by 200MB in under 1 hour!!..........LOL
Unless I pay no news for me untill next month...ROFLMAO...I do belive that I am paying a premeium for cable in NJ and @ this point I could never justify spending anymore!
This is a serious matter, it implies that like Shaw in Canada one day shortly, Comcast will drop the monthly plans for a metered approach. A friend in England commented to me about this and said,"The US is going backwards as far as the internet is concerned!" I was hore pleased in the past regarding my cable situation now I no longer know!!
1-Capped in 2 directions where before I had none.
2-More cost...in reality cost of use for both modems and TV should be going down
    3-No VPN
    4-Use tracking
    5-Outages and issues
6-Idot proofing by use of software!
    7-Impending upload and download limits!!
I think as consumers we should act before it's way to late!!!
Sorry for venting yet the news thing is the tip of the iceburg!!

I feel your pain Elmer. I myself download huge amount from the comics binaries newsgroup, and within 5 days i have reached my limit.

And don't even get me started on the speed caps. I get only 85Kbps to 360Kbps down these days. I dont care much for the upload speeds. I am inching very close to going back to dialup service. Why pay $45 per month when you can get the same speed for $15 per month? And as far as i remember, the dialup ISPs had not placed any limit on the newsgroup downloads.

It is only the middle of March and I am near 75% of my quota. Do they automatically block access if I go over my quota or do they start charging me?

    This sucks.

Great to see other very satisfied Comtrash...oops I mean Comcast customers like myself. The one gig limit on newsgroups is awful. At least they did offer something. Now I am just dying to see what there new tier price plans will offer. For more money maybe Comcast will give us what we had with @home.

    Sad day

It has been a sad day since COMCAST took over the internet in our area. Service sucks, you can never talk to a person that really knows what is going on. They charge more but provide less service and now they drop Newsgroups. The only thing that you can conclude from this is:

Service is not a word they use
They could care less what users think because they have a captive audiance
They will continue to offer less for more money
They are a bunch of jerks

Higher caps than most other ISPs
Newsgroups are gone cuz the percentage of users that use them VS. the cost of offering the service got too low
And you're misguiding your anger them cuz you're one of the few that care about newsgroups.
