    NIC Buffers...?

I saw a post last night...I can't locate it now, but it mentioned using NIC buffers. I am ignorant on this subject. Can anyone elaborate?
I am using the RealTek listed in my stats below.

These are earthmo's NIC Buffer, you can enter them in registry or with Cablenuts software here

    Knew I forgot something:

    InitalLargeBufferCount-200
    InitalMediumBufferCount-450
    InitalSmallBufferCount-960
    LargeBufferSize-262144
    MediumBufferSize-577280
    SmallBufferSize-62240

Ok...got the numbers...can I just merge them with a .reg file...or do I need to navigate to the right key area. If so, what is the path?

I don't know the path, I would use Cablenuts software, for XP, not for 98SE

Remember, installing Cablenut will remove prior patches so if you use Optimizer, rerun

Now pray tell why would Earthmofo's not be better than these, maybe they work better for you, but may not for him, so why not say try these too and select fastest instead of Wrong?

the no was directed to your post above me, where you mentioned the path was in TCPIP instead of AFD.

Well! Now that I've went and corrected the earlier entry (thanks to Lobo! j.k.)....here are my latest and best results!

    Speakeasy Test

Your download speed : 1216078 bps, or 1216 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 148.4 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 124223 bps, or 124 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

By the way....just what does NIC buffer do and how does it affect anything?

Now, DSL results say I'm good. SpeedGuide TCP Anylizer tells me to consider changing my RWIN value...what gives?

Am I good this way or could I be better??

I have reached the 1.5mgb cap with my current settings both in Win98se and in XP with same RWIN settings. Not every time, but I seem to be good at this setting.

Here are my SG Anylizer results with current settings in WIN98se:

    TCP options string = 020405b401010402

    MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

    MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 14600
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
    Unscaled Receive Window = 14600
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
    256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
    128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
    64240 (MSS x 44)

    bandwidth * delay product:
    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 584 kbps (73 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 233.6 kbps (29.2 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 46 hops
    TTL value is ok.

    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
    Mike W.

It's not if you hit your CAP, but how fast you hit your CAP, XP comes with default RWIN of 64240, try that and select test site from Right here

Another browser may open, close it along with all running programs

Please don't EVER rely on the crappy DSLReports tweak test It is the most unreliable test on the net, it is based solely on traffic and congestion, do a speed test from SpeakEasy for results.

What numbers do I need to look at to determine which RWIN was the best for either OS (Win98 and XP) ??
Should they be different for either OS?
According to some speed tests, a lower RWIN than XP's default yeilded better speeds. Win98 seems to want a higher RWIN number than its default.
But, DSLReports tweak test always tells me to use a lower RWIN than any of the SpeedGuide tweaks tell me to use.
I have used an RWIN in XP as large as 601520, but I noticed no improvement with this number.
I don't really know what to look for in my TCP Anylizer results as to what I should change.
