Most books that teach cobol come with a copy of the MicroFocus compiler. However, if you don't have that luxury, there are two free ones that I know of--the Fujitsu and TinyCobol. The Fujitsu one is stable closed source freeware, and TinyCobol is an open source (GPL) that is currently being worked on (so, all features might not be implemented).
