Philips to make RIAA its bitch

tecChannel has a story about Philips, the holder of the most CD digital audio (CD-DA) patents. Apparently, they don't like the audio CD copy protection many record companies want to enforce in the future. They break the CD-DA standard and therefore are not allowed to use the logo. As a conclusion, Philips' next audio CD copier will be able to detect and probably circumvent the copy protection of audio CDs.

Yep, but the RIAA won't care.

They'll get Sony or someone to come up with their own format, or they just won't use the CDDA logo. Seriously, how many little girls buying boy band cd's, or older parents buying some Clapton check for the CDDA logo? None.

The RIAA's pockets are deep, and they'll do anything to continue filling them. But I am glad a major company like Phillips decided to take a step in the right direction with this. Now if only they'd release a Region-free DVD player that had no compatibility problems, I'd be a Philiips fan for life.

Now look at certain names there. Segram. Universal. Bertelsmann. Sony. AOL/Time Warner. EMI. Frankly, those six companies alone could easily take over whatever Phillips, Samsung, or any other electronics manufacturer could possibly do. Hell, Sony could do it themselves if they had to.

I'm not saying the RIAA will win, but just like MS in the DOJ hearings, they've got WAY too much money to lose this, and they'll spend everything they have to make sure that doesn't happen.

The only way people could REALLY help this (which will never happen, since the sheep will always be sheep) is to not buy ANY cd's by a major label, and to only buy from companies bucking the trend (ie Phillips). Vote with your dollars if you can.

I dunno, people will start to become very angry with copy protection and whoever supports it if they can't play their new CD's on stuff that plays old CD's. Philips is in a good position because they're basically supporting consumer rights while the RIAA is trampling them...customers will likely consider that once word gets around.

Plus the Dutch are cool...smart people they have over there.
