    How small we really are

Hi again, boards are still slow. More deep thoughts, hehe

On the huge scale of the Universe, we're just specs (if that)
    miniscule little insects.

Take a trip to the far reaches of the universe in your mind, while looking back at the earth. Watch how small the earth gets as you pass the edges of the solar system. Then how small the solar system gets as you pass the edges of the Milky Way. Then again how small the Milky way gets as you pass the next gallaxy (depends which way you were heading)

Now, as you get closer to the "birthplace" of the universe (the big bang), look back at the earth. Can you see it? It's too small right?
Well, we're even smaller, and the problems we put so much thought and worry into are even smaller than that.

So, whenever you have a problem, or are thinking of creating one for someone else, think back to this trip you just took, and how small you really are.
You're just a little piece of chit LOL

[edit] I forgot to mention...The universe is expanding, so you're getting even smaller by the second.
You little piece of chit [/edit]

I think you have to start on a smaller level than that.

If you live in a town of 100,000+ residents, chances are that hardly anyone knows you. Then think of your state. How large is the percentage of people in your state that have heard of you? Then your entire country? Then... you're one out of more than six billion people on earth. SIX BILLION. Try to realize how many that is. At the current rate of reproduction that is enough to have people walk into the ocean like lemmings, 10 at a time, and humans would still not be an endangered species! Still think you're important? Put a baseball on one end of a football field. Put a pea on the other. The sun and the earth. Walk for a mile, and put "Pluto" on the ground.

The closest solar system to us is 4.5 lightyears away, if I remember correctly. Light travels at approximately 200,000 miles, per SECOND. For photons from that solar system to reach the earth the earth it takes 4.5 years. Or look at it this way:
It's just about 28.382.400.000.000 miles away, so it's basically just around the corner. Still think you're important?

There are billions of solar systems in our galaxy. Our galaxy is not the only one.

Analogy: you're not even a grain of sand on the earth.

Yes, so much for positive thinking

    Cheers,
    Ronald

Forgive me for using the worldwide accepted metric system (I heard some backwards civilizations still use the English system.. ). I only estimated the figures, forgive me, oh master of the great knowledge .

Thanks for the clarification though, but to make sure.... all numbers I used are estimates to the best of my knowledge, and by no means exact figures

That brings us to the question... is the speed of light constant? Time to do a search back to a thread a few months ago.....

No, it isn't. Which make the matter much more complex, of course. I tried to use easy-to-imagine analogies to put some perspective on space and size. Please feel free to go more into detail & accuracy though, it's a very interesting subject, and I am no stranger to scientific language.

You know, as moon I felt it was my duty to share my point of view with the inhabitants of this little pretty planet

May I share the lyrics of a "Nevermore" song to this little chit debate?

    Insignificant

Ours is not to question the reasons why
Crippled indecision repeats the path I once denied
    Insignificant, am I ?
The color of sundown,of crimson sky
    The beauty that breaks down
And gives the day unto the night

And then one day you'll realize
Just a speck in the spectrum
    Insignificant,am I ?
And then one day you'll realize
    The beauty that breaks down
    never knows the reason why

scan my horizon as blue turns to black
    the sky is gone again
and all beneath are born to die
    insignificant,am I ?

And then one day you'll realize
Just a speck in the spectrum
    Insignificant,am I ?
And then one day you'll realize
    The beauty that breaks down
    never knows the reason why

[edit] Oh yes, if you have read my signature and this post, you may have wondered if I'm obsessed by Nevermore at the moment... Yes, I am [/edit]
