    laotop modem problem??

i have a small problem with the 3com modem in my laptop.

first off it's a NEC Versa LX notebook computer. Intel P2 266mhz, 192megs. running Windows 98SE

the modem is a PC card style 3com 3CXEM556B 10Mbps LAN+56K modem. with the most recent drivers from the 3com website.

i can get the LAN to work perfectly running off my cable modem. the problem is i want it mobile for checking e-mail and information on the internet and i want to use the dial up 56k modem.

i removed all the setting for the cable modem and installed a new dial up connection and selected the 3com 56k modem.

when i go to connect and it tries to initilize the modem it say's: Could not detect modem. It may be in use, turned off, or not installed properly or it might say: Failed to connect to remote computer. Unable to establish a connection

the modem is not conflicting with any other hardware on the system. it's running on COM2 and windows detected the modem without any problems.

i tried enabling and dissabling the serial ports from the BIOS and that didnt help at all........

i even installed the 3com diagnostic utilities and when trying to run the dialing test it will say: Failed - COM port busy

how can that be?!?!........there is nothing conflicting or using that COM port.......it's driving me nuts.......

any idea's/solutions or tips will be appreciated.......what can i do??

    thanks........

Well you would need the COM port 2 disbaled in the BIOS so the PCMCIA modem can use COM 2 or if COM 2 is enabled it should install onto COM 3.

Has the modem ever worked before? other than that maybe the modem is bad but the NIC part is fine.. happens.

i tried enableing and dissableing the com ports in the BIOS in may diffrent configurations and it will still not work. i even tried another 56k PC card and it does the same thing.

maybe i should format the drive and start over with a new copy of windows?

i dont know what to do...........
