How do you tweak Windows XP?

Windows XP doesnt seem very fast to me. I think Windows 2000 Pro was much faster maybe even better in some ways. Is there any way to tweak Windows XP? Thanks.

Have you DL all updates? Updated your drivers to XP compatibility? Did you do a clean install or update to XP? And what exactly is slow about your XP?

I did a clean install. How do you download updates? Like when i open up programs it seems like its taking longer than before. When i had Windows 2000 Pro, everything went lightning quick but now my computer feels a bit slower. Is it ok to tweak Windows XP? How do you do it? Thanks.

well, as far as downloading updates....just like you would download anything from the internet.

www.windowsupdate.com is the main thing, get all of XP's updated drivers and fixes.

then try www.updates.com to update all your other programs and stuff.

get the latest drivers for your hardware.

www.tweakxp.com www.regedit.com has tons of registry tweaks you can do.

Disable all of the visual themes, to improve performance.

Make your swap file the same amount, instead of letting Windows manage it. goto Properties of My Computer, then Advanced Tab, then click on the Settings button in the Performance area, then Advanced Tab again, then in teh Virtual Memory area, click on Change. put in the same values for both Min and Max. If you have 128 of RAM, I'd put 512 for Min/Max. If you have 256MB, I'd put 256 Min/Max, and 512 or more, 128 Min/Max.

I have 256 MB so i should put 512 min and 512 max? Before i changed anything my maximum was already at 768. So i just changed the minimum to 512 and left the max to 768. Is this ok?

ya, I would make it 512 for both Min and Max. this is better than leaving the Max at 768, since there will be less hard drive usage when windows has to use the swap file, it will be set at a fixed amount.
