Would this do this trick for converting the existing utp hub to fiber?
I live in a ranch style house and as of right now we only have one 8 port 10/100 hub in the rear of the house that has cat 5 lines to the significant rooms of the house. I want to put another hub in the basement (opposite end of the house and down a floor) and I want a good backbone line uplinking the hubs or however else I'm going to work this out.
The current hub is an CNSH800 made by CNet. The model is PowerSwitch. It is connected to a Netgear rt311 which is connected to a Terayon cable modem.
I was wondering if regular cat 5 would do the trick for connecting the second hub?
Would you consider this a possible situation that could reap the benefits of optical backbone?
I have two setup plans in mind. One would be to uplink the second hub to the first hub. The second one would be to get a switch to have the two hubs connect to. If I did this, could my current hub support an optical connection?
I was thinking that the second hub I'd get would be 10/100 but its uplink would be optical. The switch would have optical ports but a rj45 wan port to go to the cable modem. Assuming this was possible, but my current hub couldn't do the optical connection, I might be able to sell my current hub on ebay and get two hubs with optical uplink ports at the same time.
Wha do you guys think I should do with this setup?
I'd be more than willing to fill you in on any information you need to better understand the situation.
I'm not a ritch biatch but I'm not poor either. If you think optical is a long shot just based on current day needs, please also consider how long it would keep my network running competitively in terms of performance.
Thanks for all and any suggestions.
