USB to see if NIC is at fault for unstable connection

Hi! I was thinking of using hooking my surfboard 4100 up to my win2000 pro enable machine to see if my NIC card is at fault for my VERY unstable connection. Just curious about two things. First of all, do I have to uninstall my nic/remove it as a hardware device first?

    Thanks for any input!

Uninstall the drivers for you NIC. Go to the NIC vendor site and get the latest W2K drivers for your NIC and install them.

Did you have any other OS on that machine before W2K ? If yes, then was the NIC and net connection working properly on that OS ? If yes then the problem is with the NIC drivers and the new drivers should solve the problem.

I haven't tried this with the SB4100 yet, but I have with the com21 dp111 and the rca 235 (both of which have usb ports)....if you switch between the usb port and the ethernet port, you need to reset the modem for it to work properly...& you have to do that each time you switch between the two...you should be able to leave the nic stuff in without it causing any conflicts (if it does, you may have to disable it in device manager)...
