I think UBB was faster, because UBB ran pretty fast on the old server. Then when the old server was upgraded to VB, it was slow as heck!!! The ram had to be doubled!!!

I love VB though, it rocks, even though its a resource hogger.

    to clear some stuff up

vB is not a resource hogger, the front end of vB is coded in PHP and VERY EXTREMELY FAST

the slow part is due to it using MySQL as a database

You see UBB does not have a database, it's what's called a Flat File System

but vB relies on a Database which is MUCHO better then a flat file system for sure, it just needs a fast database, right now it only has support for MySQL which aint bad, but it's not the best database either, they will have more database support in vB 3, but for now we must rely on MySQL calls.

See what's happening is now because it uses the database it's having to constantly Right, Read and Re-Write to the database ALL the time when doing stuff cause it has to keep the database updated, and all this constant writting to the database causes tehe memory to be used and filled MUCH more, therefore it needs the RAM for the DATABASE not the Front End

In fact it got so bad on HardOCP's HardForums they had to totally move the Database (MySQL) to it's OWN server to get the forum to run smooth, they have 2 servers each with 1.5GB of RAM and average 400-600 users on at a time on their forums....

Also because of this constant writting and re-writting to the database it can cause the Database to become corrupt much easier

But overall even with those disadvantages having a Database Forum system is MUCH better then a Flat File System, from an administration and webmastering point of view.

As for the "Server to busy" messages we could totally eliminate that by setting the number of users connection higher, however it would make the forum and the site much slower (since they are running on the same server). See what we did is use a *nix command to limit the number of simultanious connections so that when it reaches those connections (or load average) it kicks up the "Server to busy" thing and pauses the forum till the load average backs back down. This way it won't cause the site or forums to slow down. So we COULD set it higher but it would cause the forum and website to be slower and possibly Crash, or Lock Up. But also having a more Hefty system would help also, if we had 1GB of RAM and Dually CPU's we'd have no problems. Or the optimal thing is to seperate the main website and the forum onto difference servers.

    Anyways that's a little explanation for ya'll
