Need help setting up a peer to peer network...

Need some help here...I have no idea what to do...I can setup a peer to peer with to 98 machines, but I can't seem to setup a peer to peer with using a win2k machine and a win98se machine...can anybody give me some ideas on where to start?

Ok, basic stuff you need to know for peer to peer.
1) cabling... if you are connecting using coax don't forget to terminate the ends of the network with 50 ohm resisters.
I'll assume that you are using RJ-45 type 5 cables as those are more common these days.
if you are connecting 2 systems directly together (IE no hub) NIC 2 NIC you need whats
called a crossover cable (search the net for how to if you don't have a supplier that has one). Straight thru's are for connecting thru a hub (splitter). basicly, pin 1 to pin 3 and pin 2 to pin 6 on opposite sides of the cable.
2) setup - plug in your card, drop to a dos window and run your adapter dos diagnostics
to see that your card registers are working OK. that tells you if your card is interacting with your system hardware ok. Leave your adapter settings in auto in as many places as you can. Oh, you need to load the MANUFACTURES drivers before doing this.
don't trust the stuff that you get from Microsoft! get the latest stuff directly from the card manufactures website.
3) if the card passes the dos diagnostic its time to set it up in windows. Go to control panel, click the network icon and you should see your adapter in the configuration window.
if you don't, go to hardware and make sure that windows got the plug and play settings for interrupt right( device working properly).
Next, start loading the services and protocols. Load client for microsoft networks and windows logon, NetBEUI, and file and printer sharing. TCP/IP won't hurt either. Set netBEUI as your default protocol
by checking the default box in the protocol
properties for your card NetBEUI -> NIC.
Next, in the identification tab set your
workgroups for both machines to the same name. Fail to do this and you will have trouble seeing both boxes in the network neighborhood. since your not running a domain server, check the properties for client for microsoft network and make sure your not logging onto an NT domain.

4) pray and if it works have fun....

Thanks for the help! I eventually got everything working after 6 hours of changing settings...oh, yeah by the way, I ended up using ipx/spx as the network protocol on both machines...next task is to get the internet sharing setup, I have a feeling it's going to take another 6 hours!

btw, win2k is a bitch to get working if it isn't the host machine. i have still yet to get my w2k client machine to beable to surf. my 95 and nt machine can access the w2k host just fine, but the w2k machine refuses to. i dunno, haven't had time to do any more research
