Wow, Microsoft buying Github

Is it just me, or is Microsoft trying to align better lately with the open-source community and consumers in general, while Google/Facebook are alienating them with more invasive privacy/security practices each year?

Pretty soon everything will be owned by a handful of companies, including all of the people on this planet...

People are already part of their company's value, you are a part of their market share. Google owns a chunk of you, Microsoft is fighting back as some smaller fish nibbled and made Microsoft's piece of you smaller.

It's a community for collaboration between programmers... "Git" tracks changes in files, allows for collaboration of programming code among multiple people, basically keeps track of changes in a set of files. A lot of the software on GitHub is open source/free. GitHub was ranked website #62 in the World by Alexa, has over 20 million users. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GitHub

Thanks for the info. My days of doing any kind of coding are long behind me. I only dabbled in VB and VBA. Just enough to create a few databases and that was it.

A lot of the code and Python libraries I use with hardware I attach to my Raspberry Pi is stored there. I had no idea what it was of for until I started using SBC's etc with Linux. I don't think I've ever gone there for anything Windows related though? Windows 10 IoT just doesn't do it for me. I don't have the skills to get anything done on that platform.

Hi Dude!

You are right the majority is Linux, or cross-platform oriented. Keep in mind that many of the languages are portable to Windows as well, i.e. PHP/Javascript/Java/Python etc.

I also have Python installed on my Windows PC's. It lets me do some quick edits etc without having to boot up my Linux PC. Also makes it easier to post my code on forums and keep the formatting.
I'm not a coder by any stretch of the imagination. All I know in python was all trial and error. Mostly syntax error, lol. I ended up using Python because that's what is used most on the Raspberry Pi. At least for the hardware I'm using anyway. A lot of the breakout boards I use have ready made code for Arduino, not so much for the Pi though. Searches for Python libraries for them lead me to GitHub. Then I had to figure out what it was etc. Learning as I go.
