Better memory management, multi desktop stuff is much simplier/better with Task View, Direct X 12 will be nice but thats gonna be gaming related, I doubt F@H will find a use for it.

Look around at screen shots, I skipped 8 mostly for its visuals, I'm really happy with 10. There are some visual differences but its pretty good. If you want to hold off, wait till the year is almost up then grab the upgrade.

I'm still holding back. Eventually (maybe after Christmas) I'll make the move but for now I don't see any compelling reason to leave 7.

I did it early on and haven't looked back. Once you upgrade and get your digital entitlement, you can clean install after that. If you have issues from the upgrade, just try a clean install. You also have a rollback feature that can be used up to 30 days after you do the upgrade. You can also just go back to Windows 7 if you don't like what you see. Assuming you have install media for Windows 7 and or made a system image backup etc.
I don't know the same things you don't know.

I still use Windows 7 on my main rig, only use 10 on the laptop and kids' desktops. I personally prefer the interface/graphics on Windows 7 for a PC, but Windows 10 for a laptop/touchscreen devices.

    I dig it.
Boots up quicker, runs better. I upgraded my main desktop at work...went from Win7 which it came with, to Win8 a year or two ago, to Win10 earlier this fall. Running her on 16 gigs of RAM with an i5 and a Raptor hard drive.
My laptop...went from Win7 to Win10. 8 gigs, i5, Crucial SSD. Upgraded smoothly.

You can turn off "Tablet Mode" to get Win10's version of the Start...Program menu...which is much better than what Win8 attempted to do to get the classic menu back.

I didn't really like 8...but I dig 10. Worth the time to upgrade.

If you have more than one monitor connected, like I do, tablet mode is turned off automatically, and disabled. I actually want to give it a try but can't. Not without switching the video mode to PC only.

Dan yes, I like it for a non-touchscreen laptop as well. It seems better optimized visually for smaller screens and I think it is a bit less CPU-intensive when set correctly. I like the "Battery use" information that shows what apps drain the battery, whether they are allowed to run in the background, and other little things like that.

Upgrade or buy my own disc? I'm planning on a new build before I move to Win 10 and not sure how to go about it.

If you have a currently not in use Windows 7 or 8 product key you can clean install with that. You don't even have to upgrade first. The latest consumer build will install and activate with Window 7 and 8/8.1 keys. You can get the install media here, https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/home

I don't think there is any difference between the free upgrade and a bought and paid for install. I did the free upgrade to get digital entitlements on all my Pc's. Now I just do clean installs when needed. I've used my MSDN ISO's and ISO's from the Media a Creation tool and see no difference. There are Adds in some apps, the free ones usually. You'll get those anyway free upgrade or not. Other than adds in the Apps I see no adds. There were some in the early versions of Windows 8 I believe when you did a search. Bing was tied into the desktop search and showed results for stuff online. Adds crept in sometimes. I haven't seen any of that type of stuff in a long time.

So far it's pretty quiet. There was a KB released via updates...which beefed up the Win10 "nags" on 7 and 8 systems..and that raised a lot of noise in that it could be abused to push stuff. Have Bing and other things get more "naggy" than they are. But so far..pretty quiet. No "ads" really coming up for me.

There is much less tracking in it than many Android apps imho... And you still have a choice not to use a MS account, to pick your privacy settings, and what to share with Microsoft.
