    I would always prefer Windows Defender. While it may not have the very lightest resource footprint, it is far from the heaviest. Windows Defender is around in the top tier of security suites for several years running from multiple third-party testing evaluations.

    I did use many top 3rd party free antivirus including, at various times, AVG, Avast, and Panda, but given how quickly Windows Defender/Security has improved since the introduction of Windows 10 I just don't see the point anymore.

    You have a good point, I've been using Windows Defender myself, it is much lighter than others, it provides some good baseline security, and does not interfere with web/email/etc.

    I do like to keep some other tools to run on-demand as needed, like Malwarebytes and CCleaner, but I explicitly go through the settings to prevent them from running in the background.
    Linux is user friendly, it's just picky about its friends...
