I try to pull my stuff apart about once every 3 months and air everything out, wipe everything down from dust that doesn't blow off and ensure stuff is still tight and whatever.
Case in point: I took one desktop apart this morning for it's checkup and found my XFX 8600GT in it no longer has the fan spinning - little bit of dust in it but I think it just failed. So I ordered a OEM replacement from ebay but in the mean time I've strapped a 120mm to it kind of a rig job so I can keep it running but keep air blowing on it till the replacement arrives from Hong Kong
So remember people...always inspect you're PC's and clean them at least twice a year!!

About every six months or so I remove the cover and blow the dust out with my Dad’s compressor, that’s about the extant in maintenance for me. I smoke, I sold a motherboard to Immy and he asked me if I smoke. I didn’t realize it would hold the smell.

every few months or so on mine i take it to the garage and blow the dust out, usually when the power supply fan starts to spin up under full CPU load, for some reason that is the only fan that i notice, the others are on a fan bus and they run very slow or are low speed fans anyways.
i do blow off the front and side filters on the case every week to get rid of minor dust.
Every so often at home. At work I will usually check them out.
Every few months I use compressed air on the CPU fan, Video Card Fan and Power supply (from the outside of the case, inwards) on all my workstations.
Once a year I'll take the heat sink and cpu fan off and use compressed air, as well as add one or two drops of oil to the fan bearings (thru the fan hole / plug under the label). I also do this with the power supply's as well.
If need be, I'll take the motherboard and all of the cards and memory out, if there are a lot dust bunnies are hopping around. A small soft paint brush, compressed air and a vacuum does a great job against them. Even if your computer is not on the floor, cleaning the inside reduces heat build up.

I think its good to check things over every so often.. you find things not right like I did although I didn't have any indication that something was wrong. My video card could have kept on running but lowered the life of it had I not found it when I did. If you have alot of pets and dust build up you invite extra heat and static to the system if not cleaned from time to time.

laptops I take a little more care with, so I wont have to to emergency surgery. Preventive is the best maintenance. Desktops on the other hand 2x a year just cause I have 2 terriers.
You guys are wasting money on compressed air in those little cans and risking moisture unless your compressor has filters for moisture...
Call your local compressed gas company, not LP, but places that supply gas for welding and such. AirGas is a big company and located in many cities.
You will have to pay a deposit for the bottle and invest in gauges, hose and nozzle, but it will only cost you a couple of bucks to have it refilled with dry nitrogen. (Yes, you can fill your tires with it if you are so inclined...) You can adjust the pressure, and a 10 lb bottle will probably be about right for most, although you can get whatever size you want...

Man, you guys are like mechanics, they work on everyone else's car but theirs runs terrible LOL. I'm OCD about mine, I clean it out every month or so with my compressor, runs much quieter and cooler when I do. Other maintenance is done automatically, scheduled for when I'm not using my pc.
I only have a laptop now, so I blow out the keyboard and fan intake/exhaust once a week, and usually pop off the keyboard and power-blow the interior out every few months. At work, I clean all the towers out twice a year.
Why do that when you can just take it out and wash it with the garden hose?
