    issue with my Scanner

So I've had an Epson Perfection 4490 for less than a year now, ive used it occasionally. Yesterday I started scanning in some photos, and in between changing out some photos on the scan bed a message popped up saying something about the USB device not being recognized. Since then, the light on my scanner lights up but it wont scan or anything.

I tried installing new drivers, restarting both my scanner and laptop and switching the place where the USB plugs into.

Any other advice that you can help with?

Only thing left to try is a new USB cable. You've tried it in two computers...so it's not a driver issue or computer USB port issue.

Ahh OK...well...I'd still lean towards bum USB cable (I've seen it happen)...or more likely..yeah the scanner is toast.

Did you look in device manager to see if it shows any problems, such as usb controller, etc...?
Try new usb cable as suggested.
Check the scanner power supply (small 'box' in the middle of the electrical cord that plugs into wall.) If it is distorted in shape then it is bad... (you can usually replace these)
    Try scanner with another computer.
If you have done these things and no workie, probably bad scanner... Usually they are not worth paying someone to fix. Time for a new scanner...

YOSC was right! I swapped out the cable with one from an old printer and presto! it worked!

Thanks Brian! I never would have thought of that!
