is there a bios setting on what it was set on? Test the drive with a drive testing software see what it says.

Could be your cable.. if you have Windows xp on the workstation check the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on the IDE primary or secondary controller, then left click on properties and then go to the advance settings tab. Then see if you can select "DMA if available" vice "PIO mode"

Rule out a bad cable. Go with an 80 wire cable.

okay i finally got time to look into this PC, i checked the BIOS settings, and forced it into DMA, rebooted and still was in PIO mode.

upon reboot winders went into disc check and i let it do it's thing, rebooted and still PIO mode.

reinstalled the driver and it is working now, running spybot now and some winders updates after that, then i will try the seatools boot disc on that drive to see what it says.

i wish i would have done this before i backed up her data, that took a few hours, overnite, in PIO mode to a thumb drive, only about 3GB of stuff, but didn't want to mess up the drive before i saved everything.

is that how you IT pros would have handled it ?

as always, thanks for the help
