Right off the bat, Core 2 Extreme...it's got that insane cache.

For gaming, it actually depends on if the game(s) you play support multi cores well.
For games that won't utilize more cores....you're better off with a faster Core 2 Duo
For games that will utilize more cores, a Quad will do better...for the same money as the Core 2 Duo...it will actually be lower clock speed.

So when you look at gaming benchmarks, comparing different processors...you'll see some games do better on the faster clocked C2D...because they don't really utilize multiple cores very well, so the clockspeed is what counts. And some games will do better on a slightly slower Quad...because even though the clockcycle is slower, the game can crunch numbers concurrently across all 4 cores...so the end result is better.

Get the best you can afford at this point...but considering the move to i7 I wouldn't fool with those unless you have a short budget. I'd go with the Extreme too if having to pick from those 3: Here is a list of each

Thanks for the info. I have a little play money for once and I was thinking about upgrading my PC. I was also thinking about stepping into the modern age and installing a new OS, I just don’t know which one. I’m running WinXP now. I mostly game with my PC and I need something that will utilize my ram. I have 4 gigs now and my board will hold as much as 16. I have an Asus Maximus II Formula, I know it’s an older board, but if I max it out it will last me a long time. I don’t think I’ll be building another PC for quite a while.

Slap 16 gigs in there and install Win7 64 bit.
Use 2 hard drives....let pagefile also utilize the 2nd drive...system managed size on both. She'll cook along nicely.

I've got a Q9300 I'm thinking about bumping it a little this week just to see what I can do with it.

do it, i ran mine @ 3.4 running F@H for years, brought it back to 3.1 default v-core and turned on the power saving options in bios, was able to turn down all the case fans for a nice and quiet system, and to save some on the power bill

I have five harddrives. My OS is on a 74 gig Raptor and my data storage is on a four, one terabyte drives raid5 (four one terabyte drives). I have a one gigabyte swap file on the Raptor and the raid. I have four gigabytes of Crucial Ballistix Tracer ram, HD sound, ATI 5970, and one heavy ass heatsink, Thermaltake pure copper.

It’s the start of one hell of a PC. I was hoping the Extreme chip was going to drop in price some, but that dream didn’t come true.

I still might max it out and not build another PC for a while.

Depending on your budget, you might look into a i5 or 17 Sandy Bridge. They OC like mad, and reasonably priced. The 2500K or 2600K have adjustable multipliers to boot (unlocked).
