Fast connection but still high ping

Hey I found this site through google I'm wondering if I can get some help here. I have a fast broadband connection(I tested on dslreports against a server 2000 miles away and got over 4mb download and over 2.5 mb upload) and yet when I'm playing Unreal Tournament 3 my ping is over 200 on every server. It's very annoying and makes it impossible to play. I download things very quickly, browse the web quickly, and other games are fine. I was wondering if you dudes could help me with the why and the how to fix it. Thanks.

I think you are having similar issues as this thread:

Cogent (those cogentco.com hops) historically provides very low quality/low cost bandwidth... It's a known fact that they use low budget, cheap network equipment that can cause some routing issues and higher latencies. They're like the Walmart of backbones...

It doesn't say much about Cogent when some hosting companies even advertise "no cogent bandwidth"... The one good thing about Cogent is their cut-throat pricing has played a role in lowering bandwidth prices from other providers. They're not even the cheapest anymore.

I hope this rant helps shed some light, unfortunately there is very little you can do about it short of complaining to, or changing ISPs.

Is there no way to route around the cogent hops?

Not on your end, it is up to Comcast. You can complain to them about the latency though, providing those traces with the high cogent latency spikes.

You can still optimize your end of the connection with our tools, just that you can't overcome the quality of the line they provide.
