agp440.sys (now won't boot up)

got logged out.. dont wanna type this again on my mom's notebook so i'll shorthand.

-windows xp
-last thing i remember doing was youtubing a 720p video
-comp slows
-i try to go back to previous setting
-comp shuts down
-wont boot up
-try booting in safe mode
-gets to sys32/drivers/agp440.sys
-sits a couple seconds
-powers down again

is there any other fix for this than the one microsoft has provided?

pertaining to microsoft's "solution" (assuming its one that actually works), it asks me to use the windows xp cd. i havent seen that thing in ages to be honest and i dont feel like digging it up. is it possible to use a different windows xp cd in order to access the recovery console and perform the functions its listing?

this is a huge pain in the rear. im not a safemode guru so its even worse. all help appreciated.

It's a common stopping point when Windows can't boot...if you select safe mode, you'll find it often stops at this point. Doesn't always mean it's having an issue with that specific file (basically the core of basic chipset drivers).
Try last known good config....rarely works, but I've seen it work in about 3 out of 1000 tries.
Try booting to safe mode with command prompt..and then manually loading Explorer..and run a checkdisk with repair
If not..try command prompt, or booting to a CD..and then command prompt and running a chkdsk /r.
Another option..remove the HD, slave to another computer..run a checkdisk.

i realize agp440.sys may not be the core of the problem, but i have nothing else to work with. its not telling me where the malfunction is. tried a bunch of times with last good config. it will look like its loading, i'll start to see the cursor but the screen will stay black for a few seconds and then shut down again. i guess the next thing is safe mode with command prompt.

ok tried with command prompt, same thing as when running with last good config. get black screen with cursor, and safe mode in all corners, then powers off after about 5 seconds.

So your next resort(s)....boot from CD and run a chkdsk /r
if not...yank drive, slave it to good PC...run a checkdisk with repair
if no luck there...slave the PC and you can do a manual system restore by copying the snapshot folder contents...basically you rename existing hive files (the 5 registry files)...and copy the ones from system restore points.

gonna go dig up the xp cd... do i need the same cd copy that is on the computer in order to boot from cd, or will any xp cd work?

Don't need the exact CD you installed from.
Or download/burn CD for a utilities disk like Hirens...that has a lot of good tools, you can mount a failed disk with it and do a lot of stuff with the XP lite tool it has.

just got a copy of xp sp2 from a friend. im gonna try booting it up and using recovery console.
ill do a chkdsk /r first and if that doesnt work ill proceed with microsoft's fix.

ok so i figured out i needed to switch the bios to the cd. did that. put the cd in. it told me to press any key to boot. now my monitor "loses signal" and turns off. i think it said it was checking something before it happened. its been off for like 10 minutes now. is this normal?

had a chance to boot again today. here's what happens. says press any key to boot. push the key. then it says "setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...". then my screen powers off, so does my keyboard. all i hear is the cd drive. i've only left it on for about 10-15 minutes. i guess i'll try leaving it on longer this time but i this doesn't seem normal. maybe it really does take a long time to do. no idea.

I have an issue from time to time (just experienced it an hour ago) where booting to safe mode hangs at agp.sys and then it apparently runs chkdsk (without the blue screen)

Its still not working... I rebooted and took the cd out today, before it was going to "inspect the hardware configuration" (which would turn my screen and keyboard off, and it (somehow, no idea) went to the blue screen and did chkdsk automatically. It said it removed 2 orphaned files or something... reader.msi I think and something else... It finished then went to the desktop. Shut down after 2 minutes. Still no fix. This is really frustrating.
