Slow Internet speed, but good speed without router

    Hi,

Most of the time my Internet connection is slow, sometime it's not.
If I turn my laptop off for the night, the next morning my connection will be slow for most of the day. Sometimes there are random slow downs.

    I did a speed test on speedtest.net.
Through my router (TP-Link), the connection speed was 0.50 mb/s
Through the modem, the connection speed was close to 5.0 mb/s...like it's supposed to be.

Here's the result for tracert www.yahoo.com

    Code:
    C:\> tracert www.yahoo.com

    Tracing route to any-fp.wa1.b.yahoo.com [67.195.160.76]

    Model of your TP-Link?

Is your router placed next to the modem?

    TP-Link model = TL-WR340GD

Relocate your router a few feet away from the modem.

I see no major changes. I still get those random slow downs. The only solution for me is use the Internet only through the modem...avoid the router. It wasn't like that before.

    What should I do?

    Thanks!

The router may be taking a dive on you..going bad in other words. Try the reset button on the back and see if taking it all back to defaults works, also might want to look to see if you have the latest firmware installed on it but you should be behind a router for security purposes cause if you just hook straight to the modem your opening yourself to constant attacks.

    Hello Nick,

First, when you bypass the router and go straight to the modem I'm assuming your plugging in an ethernet cable. Have you plugged in the ethernet to the router? (then disabled the wireless) Is it just as fast?

Also take off all security (temporarily) and try and connect. Is it much faster? What type of security do you use?

What type of wireless network do you have, b, g, n? Is the router setup for that type of network? What is the signal strength to the router?

You're connecting to the right wireless network right?
