Looking to upgrade my entire set-up... advice please

For several years I have had basic dsl from qwest. I'm currently on a 3mbps dsl account. I'm getting really tired of playing xbox live and always having the slowest connection, never hosting a game and often having lag.

So I have decided to upgrade to a faster internet connection. Right now I'm trying to decide how to approach this situation. Should I go with cable over dsl? I can upgrade my dsl to 20mbps down with 3mbps up, or I can switch over to cable and go 20 or 50 mbps down with 4 or 10 mbps up.

Also, I'm not really sure about hardware. I currently have a qwest modem (actiontec M100) thats hooked up to a Linksys wrt54g wireless router. My router connects my computer, xbox, satelite reciever and blu-ray player. I need the wireless because we have 3 other computers, a printer another xbox and 3 cell phones in my house that share this connection.

I know some basic tech stuff about modems/routers like configurations and port forwarding, but I dont know alot.

So any advice out there as to which direction I should go to give me the best possible connection for all of my needs?

I appreciate any feedback I could get.

    Thanks

You don't have to go with over 5 or even 3 megs upstream, your XBox will max out at how many clients it can host before your connection becomes the bottleneck.

That 20/3 DSL package sounds like a fiber based package, U-Verse?
    And the 50/10...Comcast?

I'd compare the costs of the 20/3 DSL package or the 20/5 cable package. I'd probably lean towards the 20/5 cable package.

And then get a much more current generation router, the old wrt54g is a bit pokey by todays standards.

Ok so here is what I've been looking at as far as hardware and ISP.

ISP: Comcast 20mpbs down, 4mpbs up

Modem: Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem

Router: D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Gigabit Wireless Router

Does it look like this combination will work?

I'm also curious if I should switch all of my cat5 ethernet cables to cat6? Will that make much of a difference?

Looks fine, the 655 seems fairly well liked, and it's quite powerful.
Upgrading from CAT5 to 6...no it won't make a difference, CAT5 is rated to 100 megs, thus it's not a bottleneck yet.

Well I've ordered the modem and router. Comcast is coming to install my new internet connection on November 20th! Pretty excited!

    Thanks for the advice YeOldeStonecat.

    *EDIT*

Thought I'd throw up my current Speedtest.net report before the Comcast installation this Saturday. After, I will post my after-installation report.

Pre-installation.... Currently on Qwest (Via Infinity Internet) @ 3Mb/s Up & 1Mb/s Down

Fingers crossed that its a huge difference............
