    same or different channel

I have a new model (forget the model number - it's at the lake house) Linksys wireless router and access point that are connected by Cat5e cable. I have received conflicting advice as to whether they should both be on the same channel or on nonconflicting channels. Both use the same SSID and the same WPA2 setup and password. The consensus seems to be the same channel but I'm not getting good range as expected from brand new N equipment.
I would appreciate some expert opinion on the issue. Thanks.

    Different channels
One on Channel 1, and one on Channel 11. If you have to get a 3rd one in there...put that on Channel 6.

Make make/model router and access point?

Don't remember the number. Heading to the lake on Friday morning and will report back. Linksys/Cisco black fellas and the AP model # starts with W. I know - not much help, but will know better on Friday. The company that sold them to us, suggested the same channel as does a lot of sites. It didn't produce a good signal, so I shall go with 1 and 11. We may end up with a 3rd AP and if so, will go with 6 for it.
    Thanks very much.

Router is Linksys 610 and access point is wap610n. Using channels 1 and 11. Not impressed with range. The D Link DIR 655 has much better range
