wireless netbook connection to small home network with wireless router POSSIBLE? HOW?

Have a new HP 311 netbook and want to print/fax/scan using my Linksys
WRT54GS Wireless Router.

HP's site goes all around the subject but does not address my
question.

Anyone have a little help?

Well, Rick --- the only question I see is if anyone has a little help :-)

To continue the humor side of an answer, I don't have that router, and
am not familiar with it -- but I am almost willing to bet the router
isn't able to scan, or print.


To be a tad more serious -- why not tell the people here what the rest
of your hardware is? And, software, also. Are there other computers on
your LAN? What do you use to do your printing, scanning, and faxing now?

I have a Netgear router here, and my primary printer is a Brother Laser
printer. It has network capability (able to be hooked into an ethernet
cable). When it is powered up, it asks for an IP address from the
router, just like your computers probably do. To keep things organized,
I have the router told to always give the same IP to the printer.

For each computer on the LAN, I have installed the printer driver for
the Brother. The printer is broadcasting it's presence on the LAN, and
when I install the drivers for the printer, they have found the correct
IP and link to it. From that point on, the computers have that printer
available, like any other printer they may be aware of.

I assume you want to come up with some similar arrangement. If the
hardware you have for printing and scanning has the ability to be
directly connected to your network, then I think you could follow along
that route. If it doesn't -- let's say the all-in-one must be connected
to a computer directly, then you (I think) would have to configure that
computer to share the printer on the network. And, obviously, that
computer would have to be on any time you wanted to use the all-in-one.
Others here probably can point you to good help on setting that up. I
have never gotten into it.

Sorry for the long answer to a short question!

Tell the experts here more about what you have, and just what you want
to do.

No manual for router and/or laptop?

Printing is easy. You setup your network printer exactly as if it were on a
wired network.

And, I assume that faxing and scanning would work the same as on a wired
network too. BTW the last time I sent a fax directly from a computer I used
a phone line with a dial tone.

Rick, I am FAR from an expert on such matters but I had a very similar situation. After trying several methods, I finally hit a home run. Using the Control Panel>Printers and Devices, I DELETED the default printer that had been hard-wired. Using the original installation disk, I reinstalled the printer as a NETWORK printer. That worked for me and anyone else that connected to my local network. I did not have to install drivers on other computers that I allowed to wirelessly connect. Good luck.

Beispiel: I must firs state that I am NOT an expert but this is what I have learned. In my system, the cpmputer DOES NOT have to be turned on. My system consists of an Arris Surfboar Cable Modem, Model SB6121. That modem is directly connected to the cable that comes directly into my home from the cable provider. Then, there is an ethernet cable the is connected from the modem to my Linksys B2500 Wireless Router. The is another ehternet cable connected from my Router to my (non wireless) desktop.

Both the modem and router are plugged directly into a wall source power outlet (fitted with a surge protector). Because of the independent connection of the modem and router, as with my wireless HP 8610 All-In-One printer there is no need to have the computer turned on if I wish to access the printer with my laptop. Additionally, the printer is independently set up for wireless printing. NOT being an expert in these matters, I can relate that the computer does NOT have to be turned on. Admittedly, the wireless aspect of the printer may be independent of the modem and router but I am not sure. I just know it works without the computer and I have never tried printing without the modem/router turned on. The printer DOES print from my cell phone, and other laptops.

I believe the access code for a Linksys Router to be typed into a browser to access the router is 192.168.1.1. Follow the instructions in the Setup guide found under SETUP. Be careful if you decide to change any setup info. I suggest that you first write down any settings prior to making any changes.

I hope this is helpful to you. At some point, I will satisfy my curiosity and disconnect the modem and router to see if the printer is working wirelessly without the router. Bat, at this point I doubt it. Good Luck.
