Online retailer NewEgg said late Monday that it has confirmed that a shipment of Core i7s were indeed fake, and that it had broken off its supply relationship with IPEX, the supplier. NewEgg also apologized.
The fake Core i7s surfaced this weekend, and Intel confirmed them on Monday morning. At the time, reports had indicated that the fake processors were in fact so-called "demo units".
By Monday afternoon, NewEgg had rejected that story.
"Newegg is currently conducting a thorough investigation surrounding recent shipments of questionable Intel Core i7-920 CPUs purchased from Newegg.com," a spokesman said in a statement.
"Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us 'demo units,' the spokesman added. "We have since come to discover the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier. Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7-920 CPUs in question."

If it's as obvious as they make it sound they should've picked up on it, especially given the dollar value of the units.
Your comment does make me wonder how they'll make it up to their customers, and how many people received bunk processors.
yep..all the more reason to kiss up to those that paid out that high dollar value. But I've purchased thousands of dollars of items from them over the years and this wouldn't stop me. I purchased almost $200 from them today

Another source is telling us that 300 counterfeit processors were purchased by Newegg from D&H Distributing and that the fakes were delivered last week in a shipment totaling 2000 pieces. It was also communicated to me that Newegg has now "discovered" all 300 counterfeit processors.

looked around again and they are not Demo's and are fakes!
An Intel spokesperson confirms the existence of the fake Intel i7 chips in an email, "The examples we have seen are not Intel products but are counterfeits." This contradicts the press statement issued by Newegg over the weekend, claiming the chips are “demo units”:
“Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units. Our customer service team has already begun proactively reaching out to the affected customers. In line with our commitment to ensure total customer satisfaction, we are doing everything in our power to resolve the issue as soon as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers.”

They'll know which lot numbers went to which clients...and contact them I'm sure, to replace the product with a proper one. Doing much more than that? Maybe a little credit voucher.
Stuff like this happens quite frequently actually, including in the computer wholesale channels. Memory is a common one.
One of our clients is a big verification technologies client, they're hired by big companies to check products in wholesale channels all over the world, and sniff out counterfeit products. Soda and beer is one of the big areas, they're hired by Coca Cola, Pepsi, Guinness, amongst others. Also clothing.
