I never thought I'd be saying this.

I go in to take the ASVAB on Wednesday. Scored a 91 on the EST, the recruiter's expecting between an 86 and a 99 for an AFQT. After that, I find out when I get to go to MEPS and do the job selection and all that jazz. I'm joining the Air Force, for those who are interested - the six year term so I get A1C coming out of tech school / after 4 months (whichever's sooner).

Oh, also: I'm now married to a wonderful woman. Schoolteacher, K-4 reading specialist. I just thought ya'll should know.

    Thank you.

I'm hoping to get my life in a good position from this move. I want to own my own business someday, and the military experience will be invaluable for that.

First of all congrats, I hope it works the way you want it to.

Second, forget anything logical you have ever learned, there will be no more of that. The military is a strange machine. Not everything will make sense most of the time, but if you can make it through those times you will be gold. I had a Master Chief tell me once in the Coast Guard, to be a successful sailor, you blend in, take care of your assignments quickly and stay on top of your qualifications. Rank will follow.

    Best of luck to you.

    Thank you for the advice.

I'm looking at something involving programming, cryptography, or IT security / administration. Something like 3D0X2, 3D0X3, 3D0X4... (Go here for descriptions) - I'm hoping that clearance isn't an issue. The only thing that might shoot me in the foot is the Chapter 7 on my record, and I've been informed that hurt my chances of joining more than it would my chances of getting a clearance.

I figure if I make it through basic, then I can keep my head down and do my job, study for the promotion tests and take college courses, and do just enough volunteering to keep my name in the minds of the people who make the decisions.

Thank you. I've heard that the military is its own kind of beast, and so I'm not planning on going in with any preconcieved ideas.

I'm hoping to either make it to SSgt (if I stay in for 6 years), or MSgt (if I stay in for 20), so any advice on how to make that happen is much appreciated.

People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.
