    Post So my sis

Is looking for a laptop somewhere in the $500-550 range. I sent her a couple ideas, but wondered if you guys have any suggestions. She doesn't want a netbook and would like it to last her at least a couple of years.

Dell Vostro 1520, the one I linked in Minirs laptop thread, it's still on sale for under 600 bucks.
    7,200rpm hard drive
    4 gigs RAM
Windows 7 (the 2nd option..the red xmas special)
    Intel 5100 wifi

It's hard to get a laptop for under 600 bucks with a 7,200rpm drive, 4 gigs, and true Intel wireless.

I believe their Inspirons are just as good even with just a 5400RPM drive...its unlikely she will take advantage of the differences and the prices are just about right for at least 2years good warranty for around the 600-700 mark.

I've been really watching the Studio series for some price drops.

    Fall asleep in reading class?

You can get a 3 year warranty, on the Vostros its roughly 1/2 as much to get a 3 year extended warranty as it is the home grade series. It's pretty easy to add that option..for most people..just a simple radio button selection in the configuration menu.

    You can choose other colors

And without a question, the hard drive spindle speed is the biggest impact on why some (most) laptops feel so damn slow versus desktops of comparable CPU/RAM.

Plus with their business models...besides the quality being better, you can get OEM MS Office for dirt cheap, not an option in most of the home grade laptops.

I tried that 2nd config again and can't choose any other color than the red... if you go with the other options you don't get the preselects of the higher speed drives and other pre checked options unless you stay stuck with the red color and I didn't see the selection change on the warranty depending on the others...missed that one.

    LOL...holy cow! Dude....
First...the 4x they show on the first page...those are just 4 of the many..many Vostro models you can purchase. Yes the 2nd one is red..it's one of the holiday specials. The first, 3rd, and 4th ones are black...and that's just on that page of 4. You can always go fully customize your own Vostros from scratch.

Second...you don't get higher speed drives? Damn..what chu smoking? An example of the 3rd model drive options is as follows..and it's the 10th option in the config menu. The warranty options...that's the 6th option.

250GB Encrypted 7200RPM HDD via Wave SW w/ FFS, Fingerprint Reader, & TPM add $0
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive [Included in Price]
320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor [add $58]
May delay your Vostro 1520 ship date
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor [add $135]
May delay your Vostro 1520 ship date
250GB Encrypted 7200RPM Hard Drive (requires Security Hardware selection) add $0

I just had $11,000 worth of Dell computers delivered yesterday alone..and quite a bit more next week, and don't get me started for an insane month of January ordering. I can sleepwalk through their ordering and options.

yeah the options and the specials throw ya when you want something else... such as a better graphics on the Nvidia chip etc.... ohh well guess I was just hopeful for a awesome stand out deal and with 3years warranty its well over 1200 anyway and not within his price range although the warranty more than pays for itself that I've seen with a laptop.

Keep on throwing them specials out... I watch tech bargains like a hawk and still in the market for one myself but just haven't found the right mix of parts and price yet.

You can find a lower end ASUS for that much money, even with a Core 2 Duo cpu and 4GB of RAM.
