    Help with Ubuntu install

Want to run Ubuntu Server 9.04 and have it installed, but only to the $ command line.

I have the motherboard drivers for Linux (ASUS) on a USB stick and want to get them loaded.

Have looked up other links for a GUI and such so think I can install that when I get to that point.

Just need help on getting the drivers loaded so that I can access the internet.

Please make it step by step as I'm not that familer with the Linux command structure as yet.

You should not need any motherboard drivers. They will be already built into the linux kernel. The onboard lan should be auto-detected during the install and will get configured.

Other drivers will have to get compiled and built if absolutely need to install them, but not likely.

You won't be able to build and install the drivers using a gui, use command line, unless the packages you have on the usb stick are .deb files. To install a .deb file use this command:

    dpkg -i <name of file>

To build the packages and install them you will need several additional utilities. Use this to download and inatsll them:

    apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
    (note, those are reverse quotes)

Then stick in the thumb drive, cd to the directory of the driver package. Instructions for installing should be there in a text file. To read the text files use:

    editor <path/filename>
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.
