so I just signed up for comcast business internet, only way to get anything faster than a 5x1 connection where I live...
they told me I had to provide my own router, but they would provide the modem, yet all the posts I see from other people on comcast business is that they were provided with some type of gateway/router,etc...
can someone explain to me what I should be expecting when they show up and what I am going to need to network my house again?
currently have DSL with a linksys router and a coupe of switches.
they are providing me with a static IP, will that be WAN side? and all my systems LAN side still be 192.168.x.x ?

All the Comcast biz setups I've done, they provide you with an "SMC Gateway" which is a combo modem and router. You can configure your own router behind this, bypass the NAT/firewall rules...so that your own router will obtain the WAN IP address. If you have a basic Linksys router...there's really no need to use it instead of the SMC, as the SMC is quite stable and has all the basic feature sets.
The static IP is on the WAN interface.

thanx, I just spoke to my local rep at the sub station in town, and they said they do not provide a gateway device, just a modem with no router capabilities. apparently it is no different than the motorola surfboard that they provide here for residential service.
so yeah, I got lucky and had it installed a day early, and no gateway. they provided me with the same surfboard modem that I already had.
