Should I buy an internal 1TB HDD or an external?

Either looking to buy this one

......or an external drive. Wondering if someone can fill me in on any pros or cons of the externals and if maybe there's another model out there with better performance.

Do you want it for portable backup or anything like that? Internal versus external is more a decision based on what you wish to use the drive for.

Unless you have an eSATA connector on your mobo, internal will give you better performance.

yeah i dont intend to be taking it anywhere really.

Would you consider that listed drive to be good or do you have other recommendations?

from what i understand the WD black series drives are the faster ones, faster than the blue and green series.

but i may be wrong so double check that

The green series are better at using less power.

If you want speed from WD you want the black series.

The "Green" edition WD HDDs are for saving power, they are not the fastest. Look for the "Black" edition to provide the best performance, there is a 1TB Black Edition, as I'm using one. Typically Internal is going to be faster than external because 1.) the USB 2.0 bus is slower than SATA II and 2.) the hard drives inside the external enclosures are usually of the "Green" edition variety

I would spend the extra $10 and get the black edition.

internal vs. external? imo, internal hands down. its easy to turn an internal into an external for cheap. other way 'round, not so much. many of the OEM external enclosures arent meant to be taken apart, meaning theyre either snapped together or use a special tool.

WD Black series is the way to go for sequential reads/writes.
