Question Have You Ever Been Hacked?

Just wondering if anybody here has actually had their PC hacked? If so, what did the hacker actually do to your system? ? ?

Yes, I have been hacked. It was about two months ago. They renamed my "Documents and Settings" directories something and anumerings, when I went to the icon on my desktop looking for this info I couldn't find it. Since I leave my machine on 24x7 I figured it was time to reboot. When I tried to reboot needless to say I couldn't, but I was able to get it up in safe mode. Upon doing so all of my programs/data were gone. After looking around in Explorer I found them. I was worried I may have some sort of virus or other program loaded on the machine so I copied the Data (three years or my work) and re-formatted. After doing all of this I called the FBI and found out I would have to loose $5000 before they would get involved. If I had lost this info that would have been the case many times over.

    Question

Any ideas on how they got into your PC? What are you doing different now, to prevent another reoccurence?

There are not as many hackers out there as you think, 90% of the time you get Ip hacked. Its very simple, my grandma could do it if she wanted, I use to do it all the time! all they do is send you a server (usually a exe file) and you run it and it does nothing, but really it just opened a hole in your computer, then all the person has to do is plug in your ip in the program the server is associated with (most commonly netbus or sub7) and Bam!!! Hes in your computer and can do ANYTHING he wants!

Most people are aware, after all the I LOVE YOU scare, not to run .exe/.com/.vbs files [and the likes] received from an email, for fear of a virus or trojan.

Nope, But My neighbor was. The hacker remove
most of their system files.Being they leave
the computer on all the time. They didn't
know till they went to install a game and had to reboot. At this this time it would not reboot and a dos screen list all the files
that were missing. They thought it might had been a virus but their virus scanner never pick it up as one while it was still running.
So to fix the problem they just reinstalled
windows and got them self a firewall.

    Question

I use zonealarm,I think it's worked for me pretty well so far,and I think win98se ICS provides a residual natural firewall on the client machines,my question is this, zonealarm alerts pop up sometimes 3 or 4 times a day for days at a time,it gives me a netbios address and sometimes a port address, can i do anything with these ip's or are they hackers or are they roadrunner running some kind of tests ? or are they some legit site server that i've been to still trying to talk to my pc ?

I likED Zone Alarm until I installed HackTracer. When I was running Zone I was always gettin to many errors when surfin or downloading stuff. I would try and downlaod a video and it would not let me connect, no matter what the setting that I would put it on. Or when I would run Napster it would sometimes not even let me download. I would have to shut down Zone and then resume my surfing as usual until it was time for to go to bed or something, then I would engage the Internet Lock. HackTracer is a very good firewall and keeps my system extremely secure. It also traces the IP back to its origin and lets me report that IP that scans my ports to the proper authorities, now that is cool.

Crazyman I have a Ip checker. Most usally they are roadrunner. Most of the ones I check endup being roadrunner. They are usally just scanning for illegel hookups. I was wandering why so I called them and they told me it was for illegal connection. Such as running severs or just plain trying to stealbandworth. Some are just Regular services checks to. WEll at least this was there Explaination.
