    Cable Connection Oddities/Help Needed

I hope someone can help me here. Basic set up info is Cable 10 megabit connection/1 Up through Baja Broadband, Vista 64 Home Premium SP 1, x58 Core i7 setup, Motorola SB5101.

The basic gist of it is that for about the past year my connection really slows down at night. I will go from 1 meg downloads to... say 60 kB/s downloads. Dramatic reduction. I usually call the tech support number around when my bill comes. Mostly just to let them know that I know things are slow, not really expecting a cure. It seems like typical area overload to me. They say there is no problem in my area, reset the modem, etc. Nothing changes.

Well, I finally got a lady who wanted to help. She put me in contact with our local techs(why this never happened sooner, I am not sure). Anyway, I have been working on and off with them for about 3 weeks. And, to their credit, they are very good and actually really care that I have a good experience with my internet.

They have said there is no bandwidth problem in our area and that we have way more than we need. One of them brought his lap top and did some speed tests and said "well it's not your computer." This lead to a series of events where they found one of the "cards on the node" was being overloaded. They swapped that out. Didn't really fix anything. Then he found the amp on the line was really shot. So he replaced it. They also swapped out my modem. The combination of these three things has helped, but not cured the problem. Instead of 60kB/s downloads during peak times, I can get 300 kB/s or so. I will post my signal results below, but I'm getting a great signal as far as I can tell.

So what else could it be that is causing my slow down? It's very predictable and fairly dramatic. Come 4 pm things to start to slow down, by 8 pm it's slowed down, and by Midnight it usually is okay again. That sounds like such a classic cable internet situation that I just assumed our area couldn't handle the demand. I don't see how it could be my computer settings when during the day time (non-weekend only) I can max my connection out fairly regularly.

To further complicate matters, why is it that if I download a file the normal way during the day from a known "good" server(ie. ati drivers or an apple.com download) I will get 1 mB/s, but around 8 pm that will go to 200 kB/s. Yet, if I use something like download accelerator with "10 connections" it will max out my connection. Also, torrents seem to be able to max out my connection if I download a linux build or some such thing.. even when speed tests show my connection to be slow. Does this make any sense? I've confused myself too, don't worry.

I did a tracert to www.yahoo.com because I've seen that requested, but I am not sure how to copy and paste it. Nothing looks abnormal to me. No lost packets, and pings are under 40 ms for the first 9 hops.

Here are some numbers. Hopefully someone can help:

Thanks, that works. I currently have a router hooked up. Doesn't seem to make any difference unhooking it.

I really don't get my connection. Like right now if I download an nvida driver just through the browser it's moving at about 100kB/s. If I use download accelerator It's 1200 kB/s. Sunday's the net always seems slow.

Unfortunately no better. I get about a 90 percent speed drop from 5 pm to midnight every night and yet they assure me there is way more bandwidth for our area than we need. It's really frustrating. I don't really feel like calling them every day, and at this point I think they are out of ideas anyway.

Yes. Everything is 100 percent up to date. They came out again and swapped out the amp at my tap. Things were good for about an hour, but they are right back down the toilet.

Frankly I am tired of calling them and I think they are tired of me calling. So now I feel like I'm in a "must live with it" situation.

Sadly where I live the only other option is 1.5 mbit dsl and that doesn't necessarily thrill and excite me.

Downloading Safari off apple's website and it's coming in at a screaming 100 KB/sec. Pretty good for my 10 MBit connection. /sarcasm.

Have you checked a downstream/upstream rate in your modem/router ?

How far is it between your comp and ISP ?

I've been receiving the very same problem.. Unfortunately, I've tried to follow the instructions as well, but no luck in speeding it up.. T_T Can someone send me PM and teach me how to do it?

Hi. How do I check a downstream/upstream rate in my modem/router ? I've been experiencing same trouble with my connection. I have tried to download same program but still won't speed up the connection.
