    Terrible Comcast!

Ok so most of the gamers know that comcast has been slipping in the past few months. It seems to me the main problem is with peering to TWtelecom. I live in Houston, TX and have a server collocated at colo4dallas in Dallas, Texas A couple months ago I would get 15 ping time now i get 60 ping time constant. Here is a tracert to my server in dallas texas.

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator>tracert 72.29.96.196

Tracing route to 72.29.96.196 over a maximum of 30 hops

    1 7 ms 8 ms 8 ms 73.212.8.
    2 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms ge-3-25-ur01.lamarque.tx.houston.comcast.net

    3 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms te-9-3-ar01.royalton.tx.houston.comcast.net
    4 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms po-11-ar02.royalton.tx.houston.comcast.net
    5 10 ms 11 ms 9 ms po-17ar02.greenspoint.tx.houston.comcast.net
    6 23 ms 16 ms 15 ms te-0-4-0-4-cr01.dallas.tx.ibone.comcast.net
    7 51 ms 52 ms 51 ms pos-0-13-0-0cr01.losangeles.ca.ibone.comcast.ne
    t [68.86.85.145]

    8 62 ms 61 ms 61 ms 68.86.89.110
    9 50 ms 50 ms 49 ms scor-02rif1.roch.twtelecom.net[66.192.240.194]

    10 49 ms 49 ms 53 ms 206.123.64.134
    11 51 ms 49 ms 49 ms 72.29.96.196

    Trace complete.

As you can see im being routed From houston to Dallas then comcast sends me from dallas to LA then back to data center in dallas. This is very bad routing. This is what comcast corprate office told me after talking to them and showing routes to them for about a month.

-According to the maintenance team, the backbone team, national support
desk, they all said this is the correct route.

    William Gerth
    Comcast Corporate Office
    Comcast Customer Connect
    One Comcast Center
    1701 JFK Blvd.
    Philadelphia, PA 19103

This is absolutely not the correct route. I warn all people with comcast or thinking about getting comcast to find a better cable provider. If this is the only cable provider then your best bet would be with DSL minus the support at the start I have never had a problem with DSL always pinged 9 to dallas and 40 to Chicago. Thanks comcast for false advertisement and stealing my money for a ****** service. Our cable even sucks too we have lines on the tubs and static. Comcast has came out switched our boxes and looked at the lines but they are not smart enough to fix the problem. Don't go with comcast its craptastic!

I have beefs against Comcast and the routing they do also... I go 30miles north..then it goes back down to 50miles south of me then back up 60miles north of me again to the east and then north again before it hits a backbone..but your trace looks ok as do the pings. A difference of 9 and 50 looks like alot but really I don't think its going to matter much. But I also don't see why they are routing you over to Cali which is what it looks like to me unless they are having issues with a hop somewhere.

Comcast is one of the better ISPs.

As sava mentioned your pings are fine.

As for routes I see you going, houston > dallas > La > Missouri > and then off the comcast stuff.

Theres nothing wrong with a ping in the 50s or 60s. Make sure your system is clean as well so that you aren't getting any slow downs on your end.

I have problems with comcast as well in Houston, TX zip 77027. I started doing research tonight and stumbled on this forum... I am a competitive Warcraft 3 player and lately my latency has been horrible. Recently it has gotten much worse. In games sometimes the response times are as long as 2 seconds!! In the past they were only a fraction of a second. The ping according to bots in channels when I log in used to be under 40, and now it is often over 100, but in game play lag feels typically 1+ seconds lately.

Any ideas aside from berrating comcast?

Additionally have experienced several short disconnects long enough to boot me out of a game... akas @ azeroth on warcraft include FixPairingPlz , KiLLeR.dk , Real_killer.dk

Just ran a trace route ... never used any of these tools before so don't really know what exactly the results mean.

This is not acceptable since i play online video games and its rest solely on latency. I use to ping 15 ms to dallas every since this hop route to la i get 60 that hop is completely unnecessary since you can see I'm already in dallas before I go to la then it takes me back to final destination in dallas.

Its within an acceptable time still. It would be cool if they offered a gaming package that was held to higher standards, but they don't.

They're one of the best ISPs up north, and as part of my making a living, I deal with many many ISPs all the time. When I have a client that has their networks on Comcast business...I can always breath a sigh of relief knowing I'll be having an easy job with their support and service. I had them in my old house for quite a while, I miss those 30 meg download speeds too. Online gaming was rock solid as could be.

It seems there are more frequent problems down south, due to the mergers and buyouts of ISPs down there. Due to the more sparse layouts, regional hubs and backbones down there...it may take some time to iron out issues when these mergers and buyouts happen.

a 15ms ping to 60 isn't much difference regardless of what game your playing. I along with many others here are avid big time gamers and to be honest as long as your under 80 your fine. What games are you playing anyway?

It is a huge difference. The impact on the delays in game seem to have a multiplicative effect on ping. When ping went from 40ish to 100ish, delays on responses to clicks went from fraction of a second/barely noticeable to 1+ second which causes massive problems in an RTS at the very high end of competiveness and tournaments. For a casual gamer it won't matter, but for someone aiming to maintain #1 on a ladder of 1000's it matters.

I agree that it is unfortunate that they do not offer a gamer package geared toward optimizing the connection for gamers. This is actually a really good idea and would think Comcast would be able to make millions in additional revenues by offering a package for like an extra $10 or $20 a month to improve response times, not download speed for large files.

I've played in the 20's to 40's and 60's but unless your over 100 your not going to notice a difference between those 3 even at games like Battlefield 2 which are highly responsive to pings. Comcast would rather work harder with the RIAA about busting you stealing music than give the gamer or more advanced user a better connection..thats just the solid truth.
