ISP seems to be resetting MTU...Which do I use?

    Hi everyone,

My ISP is Vodafone Spain via HSDPA. My MTU was always 1500. And when I checked it using the TCP/IP Analyzer, it appeared as 1500 and that was what I had my TCP/IP settings set for.

But some time ago, it started appearing via the Analyzer as 1400 even though my settings were still at 1500. And according to Switch NDT tests, "Network Middlebox is modifying MSS variable". Moreover, ping tests tell me that it should be 1400.

But my Linksys router WRT54G3G is set to auto detect the MTU and it returns 1500 on the status page.

So, my question is which MTU should I use for the calculations of my receive window. 1500? Or the value that is being set by my ISP, which appears to be 1400?

And should I still use 1400 if I cannot get my router to change from 1500 to 1400?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Jules
