blu ray drive/ audio

ok so i plan on buying the blu ray drive for my pc

and the reviews say i need to use a SPDIF to get 5.1 is this true? the sound card i have now is XFI extreme music.. and i use the logictec x530


i just played a dvd and i get 5.1 sound
