UK National ID, like it or not...

    http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,...331759b,00.htm

I know it's been voted down a few times, but they just don't give a ****. They're pressing on, waving bloody shirts and scaring people with possibilities to justify it.

And allow me to preempt: "Ain't nuthin' like dat gon' come to Amurica!"

It's true... all the experts in the country can tell the government that the system will fail, that it's a bad idea, we'll have the security of a seive, etc etc - they don't care.

The most upsetting thing is that most people will disagree with the ID card scheme based on the fact the government has a terrible track record of keeping data safe, rather than simply realising that the government has no right to their personal information. The whole "if you've got nothing to hide..." argument sickens me.

I still have an old-style passport, but you can't get a new one without it being chipped. I think this will be made mandatory by 2010, 2012 at the latest. I won't be here when that happens.
