Mushrooms anyone?

Took this picture with my phone so the quality kinda sucks. I've never seen a mushroom this size (my shoe is size 11) There were several others back there, but none this big. The mushroom was very dense inside like a latex foam or something.

Yeah, I get those growing in the yard every year. They grow out from the roots of a large tree in my back yard. The tree roots get close to the surface and these large brain like mushrooms grow out from there. My advice is to dig them out ASAP. When they rot they turn to digusting sludge... Dont mow them either, or they will spread.

Interesting to see lack of ivy/foiliage in close proximity to the 'shroom...wonder what toxins or whatever it had.

Chim...yeah..the black tar like sludge when they rot...nasty stuff.

Or if they dry..and you step on them or hit them with the lawnmower...that cloud of spores or whatever...bad stuff to get in your lungs.

We call 'em puffballs here, at least the one in Tony's pic. (although yes- it's a little too old to eat that that point). The one in JCs pic looks almost variegated- never saw one like that before, if that's what it is.

Yum- slice em about 1/2" thick, fry the slice in some butter, a sprinkle of sugar (even a little cinammon) and then serve with pancake syrup over em. My Dad used to like to bread em too.

That is a big mushroom. Make sure your dogs stay away when the shrooms start to rot.

dont think i remember ever seeing ones that big in my yard. maybe grapefruit-sized, but no like ya'all are showing

unless you're literally an expert in the whole mushroom genus and phylum thing, i wouldnt touch them. the bad ones are quite toxic, and i wouldnt even want residue on my fingers.

generally speaking, if a mushroom is not poisonous, no worries. if it is poisonous, youre dead (if you eat it) as fried chicken. very small margin for error.

I'm about 100 percent certian, that the pick Tony linked is a puffball. It's edible but is too big and overgrown in that pic.

I have not a clue what the other fungi is in JC's pick. At least not without a better pic of the bottom of it and maybe a pic of it cut in half, although it may be too overgrown to eat if edible anyway.

Mushrooms grow on decaying matter so if it's growing on a root, you can dig it up and toss it.

I pushed back the ivy around it for the pic.
And yes, they are edible, and tasty too!

I eat wild mushrooms whenever I visit my brother. He's quite the expert on them. Yes, most mushrooms/fungi are toxic. The problem w/ toxic mushrooms is the toxins affect the liver, and symptoms usually don't appear for about 3 days. Thus, someone poisoned goes to hospital and docs ask, "What did you eat today?". By then it's too late...
