Question How do I "break" my cable modem (or if I need to)?

I have as Motorola SB4200 Surfboard modem which Telewest gave me for my broadband connection way back in the dark ages.

After having spent a considerable time talking to various Virgin Media people I'm starting to believe that some of them don't know what they are talking about. Indeed, the last chap I spoke to put my 4Mb speed (when I should have been upgraded to 10 several months ago) down to "my area not having been upgraded yet". North London? Hmmm. I think he was telling porkies just to get rid of me.

After having read many threads I'm starting to think that it could be my modem at fault' maybe an older modem like mine may not be capable of 10Mbits. I just don't know (Model SB4200).

Now I'm trying to figure out IF I need to "break" it (to get a newer model from Virgin) and HOW to "break" it if I need to.

Anyone know if I need to "break" it (first of all)? and...

Anyone got any (sensible) suggestions please about HOW to "break" it if I need to. (Like, I know that stamping on it or dropping it off the Post Office Tower would probably do the trick but I need a way to "break" it that will convince Virgin that it has suffered from a legitimate fault)?

So I take it you rent the modem? Most likely you can bring it down to a local office and exchange the modem if you're worried about it being a possible cause.

The SB4200 is capable of 38mbps down and 10 upso you should be fine though.

What are your signal power levels? And post a SG TCP analyzer report.

Theres no reason to break your modem.

Thanks for the reply and your helpful advice.

I don't pay any rental charges on the modem as such. I was simply given the modem when I joined my ISP in 2001. It is a solid and nice looking modem and has always served me well so I'm happy to find out that it is probably not a problem.

I'm generally a pretty honest person by the way and wouldn't even have considered such an action with what my ISP used to be - a very good service when it was Telewest. But since being taken over by Virgin Media I feel that the service has deteriorated. I've spoken to them about the problem but they say they can not help or provide another modem. They have even said that were I to buy my own modem they would withdraw support for all my services.

    RE:SG TCP analyzer report
I have posted this info on another thread here in an attempt to fix a speed discrepancy between two PCs. It is also posted below but the info in the other thread may have a baring on the problem so I thought it best to let you know about it.

Here are 2 SG TCP analyzer reports for 2 different PCs on the network:

RE: Signal Power Levels. Here is the information I get from the modem's "Signal" tab.

    Downstream:
    Frequency 330750000 Hz Locked
    Signal to Noise Ratio 37dB
    Power Level 2 dBmV

    Upstream:
    Channel ID 1
    Frequency 18800000 Hz Ranged
    Power Level 40 dBmV

And on the "Configuration" tab there are three params which are editable. They are set as follows:

    Frequency Plan: European PAL I/B/G
    Upstream Channel ID: 1
    Frequency (Hz): 330750000

There is also a check box on this page (which is checked) to enable "DHCP Server" and underneath this check box is the following text:
"The SURFboard cable modem can be used as a gateway to the Internet by a maximum of 32 users on a Local Area Network (LAN). When the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet, users on the LAN can be dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem DHCP Server. These addresses are assigned from an address pool which begins with 192.168.100.11 and ends with 192.168.100.42. Statically assigned IP addresses for other devices on the LAN should be chosen from outside of this range."

Note: I have a Netgear MIMO Wi-Fi Rangemax router which is set to have a LanSide IP# of 192.168.7.1. On this device DHCP is switched on and configured to assign a range of IP addresses to any devices that have no statically assigned LanSide IP address using DHCP (This range is 192.168.7.[2-20]). Hence I don't think any devices are ever given an IP from the modem because (1) they never get that far; being given an IP (if necessary) by the router (which has NAT) and (2) if they were to be given an IP# in the range 192.168.100.x then they wouldn't work on the network (which has a standard subnet of 255.255.255.0).

The strange thing is that under the "Addresses" tab on the modem config page, the modem's own LanSide IP# is reported to be 192.168.100.1 so I don't really understand how the modem is being seen at all on my network ??? (I don't see any way to change this address in any of the modem configuration).

There is a "Log" tab in the modem GUI as well. It is very long and seems to show many errors. I don't know if it helps but I've posted it below in case it does:

    Unbelievable!

After having been assured that I was on 10Mbits by several tech bods at my ISP, I've just spoken with someone there and they are telling me that my area has NOT been upgraded after all.

Sorry for this unnecessary thread and thanks for the help and for letting me know that my modem is up to the job. It seems however, that the mystery has now been solved.

When my ISP was Blue Yonder (Telewest) it was the best ISP around. Now they are throttling bandwidth at peek times and have breached their customers' privacy by handing over usage information (based purely on up/download volumes) to third party companies.

It seems that their tech bods don't know what they are doing either.

My advice, for what it's worth, is if you are thinking about the "blistering" speeds that Virgin and their fiber optics have to offer then think again or be very careful to read the small print in their fair usage policy.

In my book "fair usage" should be the advertised usage. Not the actual usage subject to the limitations of small print.
