Try the following with TCP Optimizer:

    General Settings tab:
    Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
    MTU 1492
    TTL - 64
    TCP Receive Window - 127776
    MTU Discovery - Yes
    Black Hole Detect - No
    Selective Acks - Yes
    Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
    TCP 1323 Options:
    Windows Scaling - check
    Timestamps - uncheck

    Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
    Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
    LocalPriority - 1
    Host Priority - 1
    DNSPriority - 1
    NetbtPriority - 1
    Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
    QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
    ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
    ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 80
    MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
    NetFailureCacheTime - 0
    NegativeSOACache Time - 0

I have a very simple question. I gathered that your NIC has to be tweaked according to the settings for MTU/MSS in the router, so my question is: if my settings in TCP/IP Analyser show something like

    MTU = 1452
    MSS = 1412

    and

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 130680
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor of 2)
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65340

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    519616 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
    259808 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
    129904 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
    64952 (MSS x 46)

My router is locked to these MTU/MSS settings and I can't do anything about it. It is also a PPPoE connection within the router.

am I supposed to get the optimal speed settings from my connection if I tweak the NIC's parameters to MTU=1492 [like for PPPoE connection] and all other parameters accordingly or should I set my NIC's parameters to MTU=1452 and then set the receive window to something like 129904 as it is a 4Mbps/768kbps link?

It is a simple question eh ? I am not a newbie, but I'm just not sure about this... or should I just leave the NIC settings alone ? I mean, it works well enough whatever I do.

A very short version of the question would be: Should the NIC settings reflect the settings in the router?

    Cheers!
