Thread: Global Catalog Question

    Global Catalog Question

Recently, we created a new domain controller and removed the old DC from our network. The process was pretty smooth (I had help since I had never done this before) but I have a question about the Global Catalog.

Whenever I create new users in Active Directory, I get a warning informing that the user cannot be verified as being unique because the Global Catalog cannot be contacted. The reason: the server is not operational. I know this is because we took out the old DC.

My question is this: Can I simply go into AD sites and services, navigate to the new DC, view NTDS properties and check Global Catalog or is there more to this?

Did you change the GC from the old server to the new one?

What exact steps did you take to retire the old DC?

We transferred DHCP and Active Directory when we did the switch. We didn't change the GC over...

"Exact steps"..meaning..each and every one of the FSMO roles? I like to do a role or two at a time..and then give it time to replicate/complete...checking the logs.

The GC is something I like to do before retiring the old server also.

And...did you "demote" the old server before unplugging it from the network? Meaning...you run DCPROMO again...and run through the steps of removing active directory from it. Instead of just unplugging the old server and throwing it out, or removing the computer account from AD.

But I'd start by putting a check in the checkbox for GC. There has to be one on the network.

Since I didn't do most of the actual work, I don't remember this part (I didn't take notes like I should have). But I'll go through what I do remember...

We moved Active Directory to the new server and verified that it transferred correctly. Then, we stopped DHCP on the old server and set it up on the new server. Next, we demoted the old server using DCPROMO. When I say we, I mean he did the work while I watched.
