The internals are cheaper and have a longer warranty.. get yourself a nice little internal say a notebook 2.5 HDD then get a cheap little encloser for it.. they run about 10$ for a nice encloser for USB. Thats what i did with a old HDD some student left from their laptop, they didn't want it no more so I whipped it clean and put it in a encloser now it holds my Images and some other stuff.

If it is just for backing up, and speed is not a problem. Buy a internal Western Digital and put it into a USB external enclosure. I've got 3 of these. Very nice for backing up.

I'll look into the internal & enclosure thing, but if it's going to be a hassle to "put together" or "configure" then I'll pass.

nope..very easy. Drive slides into enclosure, you put a few screws into the sides to hold into place inside, then hook USB cable to it. When you plug it in it detects it as a drive just like a flash drive does.

    Thanks it!

Yup, purchased (2) 500gb externals earlier in the year. They look nice and clean setup on the desk as well.

I've got two of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136030

One is on 24hrs a day and the other I pull out for backups now and then. Couldn't be happier. Fast, low noise, not much heat and plenty of space.......I'd buy the 1TB version if I was buying today though.
