    Chinese Sub > US Navy

When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

a full-blown tactical battle between an electric/diesel (song class) and a Seawolf/Virginia class submarine....

Not a real battle at all...

Americans were simply asleep at the wheel on this occasion, in my opinion.

This is not a surprise as our Military is twenty years old. Almost nothing is new about it since the Reagan era.

    Umm....that's not the point.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.
This is equivalent to trading a "Pawn" for a "Queen" in chess.

Only if the world class chess player was sitting there with drool running from his open mouth while he slept.

Subs give off a unique sound signature. Prior to this intrusion, it's a safe bet that the songs sound was filtered out. I bet this doesn't happen again.
