    Slow or fast network?

    Hey,
I go to college and our network is unbelievably slow. The campus is supposed to have a centralized backbone with a gigabit Ethernet connection to each building. Then theres two separate high speed DS-3 (45 megabit) to some internet provider.

The problem is that the internet is sooo slow. We get around 50 kb a second, maybe 100 at times. This is on both wireless and ethernet connections. We have around 100-150 people in our dorm. Is that substancial bandwidth?

    Hi and welcome to speedguide.

    There are too many variables.

1 Is the lan slow, or the internet?

2 How many users use the internet connection?

3 More details on the setup would be needed, not should be's or could be's.

they are prob using a packet shaper which is slowing things down, which is looking for certain things and sites like p2p's. Good luck getting that fixed unless you and many many others complain to the IT dept.

Odds are too many users, 150, 2 45 megabit lines, 75 users on each, 0.6 megabits a second.

I went down to the lab today and they get crazy fast speeds. Speedtest.net reported in 7,000 kb/s area. When I try the test on my dorm computer I get 300 kb/s. They use Cisco Clean Access to control who's on our network and I'm thinking the use that or something else to cap everyone and accelerate anyone in a lab. Does that sound plausible?

Furthurmore, whenever I try to manually specify what my IP should be and aviod DHCP I cannot get on the network. That sound like anything?

They could be throttling the speed to give labs and other work/school related connections more bandwidth.

Could you tell me how they are most likely doing that? I figure that they throttle all ips within a certain range and the lab computers are all in that range or vice versa. But would I be correct?

Most likely managed switches and packet shaping, keeping the bandwidth controlled where they can to prevent abuse.
