    Post advice on pc upgrade

    I have a

    400 Celeron
    27.2GB HD (8.32GB left)
    128MB Ram (one is PC-66 one is PC-100) hey it's e-machines fault
Onboard Graphics 8mb (I think) supposedly APG 2x speed,

I was thinking about upgrading HD... b/c I really can't spend much money.

But I could use a better proc. too, but then I have to buy one PC-100 64 MB SD-RAM since I wont screw it up again...
    AND a Grpahics card

    any advice would be appreciated

    Question

what is it that you really want your PC to excel at? [within reason]. That is where you should concentrate your upgrade purchase.

not sure, mainly b/c it's more expensive to get a Mobo and Proc.
    but to answer your question....
It could really be quite a bit faster,
especially b/c I kind of go to extremes with Multi-taksing at times....
I have 4 or 5 progs open at a time
2 to 3 netscapes, mIRC, Windows Explorer, ICQ
and WinAMP, and often even more..

well for less than 100$ you can get a cele 700 and gorb with asus slotket. maybe if you get 128M pc100 for 50$ you could oc it to like 900 easily or even higher if you wanted. You would notice a HUGE difference. all for under 175$

Yeah I definitely don't want another Cel, one of the reasons it's slower is b/c of the cache not JUST clock speed but I prolly wont be able to spend much more than $300...not alot

oh yeah, the reason I said it's E-machines fault with the ram..

The PC orignially came with 64MB RAM b4 I upgraded I called E-Machines tech support to make sure I bought the right RAM, the ******* on the phone told me the computer had PC-66 bought I didn't figure it out until later that he was a freaking moron and didn't know what he was talking about.

You can get a 1Ghz Duron + mobo combo for $220.

    Check it out: http://ocz.safeshopper.com/43/cat43.htm?149

I looked at it, seems pretty cool. But I'm not sure about it since it's overclocked.

$220 out the window, if it's not cooled, and taken care of properly.

    I'm currently looking at http://www.tccomputers.com/cgi-bin/b...a/bmam7vkb.htm w/Duron 750
    and http://www.tccomputers.com/cgi-bin/b...soysy5emap.htm w/ K6 II 500

the Biostar actually has On-Board Audio...I know it sux but it's one less thing to worry about cause the MOBO I'm using right now has on board audio as well.

Does anybody have any better sites, or something

You can't go wrong with that 1Ghz Duron combo. Yes itz overclocked but the combo includes a HUGE heatsink and besides, the CPU is PRETESTED and stable @ 1Ghz. Freckmoto bought that kit, i'm sure hez very happy with it.

If you are going to upgrade, do it right. Dont waste your time w/ another celery! Get a Duron and an Abit KT7 You could probably get both for around 150 if you look. Get a decent HSF and o/c the duron to 950 or a gig

    ------------------
    Abit KT7 RAID
    Duron 1000mhz
    OCZ Monster 2 Heatsink
    256mb PC133 Infineon 222
    10 gig
    TNT2
    Aureal Vortex 2

    apart from the O/C ing.
I guess since you said it, I will take your word on it being stable but that Mobo and proc would still cost me more altogether b/c then
I have to buy Mobo Proc $220
    Soundcard $10-60
    Graphics Card about $50
    RAM about 60
    that's 340-390 http://www.tccomputers.com/cgi-bin/b...a/bmam7vkb.htm

the Biostar Mobo (BMAM7VKB) with a 750 Duron =177.98 I might be able to find it cheaper no has onboard sound
    so +60 Graphics + 60 64 PC-100 RAM
    that's almost exactly $300

Do not get the KA7, it uses the buggy KX133 chipset. Get the KT7 combo. I am running it overclocked. It comes with a propper cooler which should keep your sys. nice and chilly

    OCZ Monster 2 Heatsink

All Via based boards are buggy. And the KA7 is a Slot A board.

uhh, if you are looking @ going to amd, better check your psu. amd's need about 275 clean to run oc'd solidly and most cele 400 machines only have 225-250w psu's. If you go amd, your gonna be buyin a new psu too. you think your bottleneck is your celeron? your l2cache will help, but I know a guy with cele 700 oc'd to over 1100 and he gets like 100fps with geforce card. shoot for that matter, buy a new mobo and go with p3 700E for less than 300$
    anyway, jmo
