I have a Netgear router behind an RCA modem (supplied by ISP), running XP PRO. I am supposed to have 2mb throughput but only getting 256kb max. When I unplug computer from router and plug directly into modem I get my 2mb throughput. I downloaded TCPOptimizer and changed my settings but still only get 256kb when plugged into router. I know the router will slow me down some but not an 87% loss in speed. Are routers designed for a certain speed? Is something wrong with it? Are there any other settings I can change to improve it. I can't leave my computer plugged into the modem becasue it's on a network that requires others to access internet as well. BTW, I haven't checked other computers on the network to see what their throughput is but I will as soon as this is posted.
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Here are the results; Interesting though, because everyone is gone and only one other computer is on.

Nope. You only posted the Summary.
You have to click the 'Statistics' button after test is completed.
Okay, let's try this one. Thanks for the tip.

not to jump in but I am a newb and trying to find out how to fix problems with my router/modem so would like to know what my results mean if you have the time? I see something I can do to optimize it but no idea how to perform the functions to do so.

I did it thru start>run but the box disappears when finished, I am not fast enough with the print screen button to get all of line 13 and when I try to insert the image here, it asks for the url. SO, I feel a little handicapped right now.
When I press CTRL C the screen disappears just like it does when it finishes and nothing is copied to paste.
What is the model of your RCA modem?
I pressed the pause/break button and it stopped. I pressed CTRL C and the screen disappears. I can paste it as an image but can't get the text to paste here and can't figure out how to paste an image here.
The RCA modem is a DCM425

Problem is partilly solved. My service provider suggested I back up my router settings and reset it to factory defaults. WALA i get my 2mbs speed. Now my only concern is whether or not I have sacrificed security. Is there a site I can test my security?
Free Online Scans - Lots of sites:
http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=218801
System security test passed and I have my speed back. This is one I won't forget. If all else fails reset the router to factory settings. Thanks so much for all your help.
